Sometimes the simple approach is the best approach, whether it’s cruising around town, commuting to work, taking in a bit of gravel, or just grinding out the miles, it often makes sense to go with the minimalist solution. Enter the Surly Steamroller, Surly’s cult classic no nonsense fixed gear and single speed frame designed to tackle the toughest of city streets and alleyways. Its 4130 Chromoly frame and fork offer that oh so comfortable ride quality that only steel offers and can take a beating, making it ideal for city riding and commuting. ED coating on the inside of the TIG welded frame helps to prevent rust from accumulating inside of the frame and fork, a nice bonus feature for riders who find themselves riding in poor weather conditions. Surly knows that there’s a large percentage of riders who want to be able to run wider tires for additional comfort or run fenders with wider tires if they commute year round. With the Steamroller, you’ll find that Surly has added clearance for up to 700x38mm tires or 700x32mm with fenders. It’s single speed drivetrain makes maintenance dead simple and nearly non-existent. Standard 120mm horizontal track dropouts make finding compatible single speed or fixed gear hubs easy. Drilling for brakes front and rear along with the bottle cage mount are generally considered uncommon for fixed gear and track frames, however, if you’re commuting day and day out they can be a welcome addition. Simply put, Surly’s Steamroller is a smooth rolling and no nonsense single speed and fixed gear frame that’s just as at home being your year round commuter as it is just being a super fun bike.
