Shimano’s new Direct Mount system represents the cutting edge of cycling technology. By redesigning the traditional replaceable drop out, Shimano was able to create a system that weighed less, was stronger and more reliable, and worked better with thru axles. The new Direct Mount dropout positions the rear derailleur 20 mm back from the end of the frame where it can safely tuck under the cassette, providing better shifting performance and protecting the rear derailleur from damage. It also allows the thru axle to incorporate more effectively into the frame and dropout, making an extremely stable shifting platform.

The M781 rear derailleur uses the new Direct Mount system and also incorporates Shimano’s Shadow clutch system that effectively eliminates chain slap and creates an incredibly stable drivetrain. This derailleur can be used with traditional dropouts by simply disconnecting the b2 link.
