The Avid BB7 has set the standard for mechanical disc brakes for years. Avids CPS (caliper positioning system, included) continues to make setup and adjustment a snap.
  • Will fit front 74mm post mount, 51mm IS front or 51mm IS (includes adapters to fit these applications)
  • Each kit includes 1 caliper, 6-bolt rotor, mounting hardware, and adapters (one brake). Order a qty of "2" if you need brakes for a complete bicycle
  • Brakes supplied with a 160mm rotor will also include a front and rear 51mm IS adapter to match the rotor size.
  • Works with any linear pull brake lever, including Avid and others (lever and cable are not included)

I bought these brakes to replace a couple of V-brakes I had on my mountain bike. The installation seemed easy enough on the manual, and I followed the instructions step by step, but the rotors kept on rubbing on the pads. I tried to make adjustments but it was impossible. Come to find out, the rotor came bent, so it didn't matter how straight I got the brake, the rotor would still rub. This also prevented me from adjusting the pads as close to the rotor was possible.
I tried to ignore the rubbing and got the pads as close to the rotor as possible, but even this would not give me enough stopping power. The V-brakes I had before had more stopping power. These aren't good brakes, and the rotor for the front I ordered was defective.

Comments about Avid BB7 Mechanical Disc Brake 2011:

I have used BB7's since 2005-2005 and I love them. They provide the best value for me as I am not a serious enough rider to be spending a ton of money on disc brakes. The BB7's combine performance and price, for me, to make them the best use of my money on a build.

I would love to convert to some XX's,but I can get the brakes done on my Tundra for cheaper. These brakes work great for mechanical and it is so nice to just turn a dial one click to adjust after a ride.

These work great, and are very easy to adjust. I read a lot of reviews before I bought these of people hyping these to be better than some hydraulic brake systems, I'm not sure about that, but for the ease of use and maintenance these are great. They are loud in the rain, but different pad/rotor combos might help with that.

Comments about Avid BB7 Mechanical Disc Brake 2011:

I am on the second set of BB7's and still am reluctant to make the hydraulic switch because these brakes are that good. Consistent braking season in and out...make the switch to the organic pads to eliminate the noise, though you'll run through the pads faster.

Still, it's hard to find a fault with these brakes. They might not have the modulation and feel you will find with a higher end hydraulic but you can still stop on a dime without a problem. Maintenance is a snap as you don't have to bleed anything. They might not be appropriate for DH, but for everything from trail to cross country these are great brakes for any budget.

I replaced the Hayes MX2 brakes that came on my bike. The BB7s have much better stopping power, very little fade, and the pads last much longer. They are easy to set up and adjust. They are powerful enough that I have no problem one-finger braking (coupled with the BB7 levers). Probably the best mechanical brakes on the market and great for the price.

Very easy to install and adjust, good stopping power, and good modulation... great for the XC riding I do.

Compression-less housing is a good idea with these.

Comments about Avid BB7 Mechanical Disc Brake 2011:

I have these front and back with 160mm rotors on an agressive hardtail. I use and HIGHLY reccomend the SD7 levers.

Pros: Very reasonably priced. I got mine for $50 each with rotors.

Easy to work on. tool free pad adjustment, not having to worry about bleeding the lines.

Very powerful. Im pretty light (150#) but they have way more than enough to stop me in any condition at all. Im also using the smallest rotors, so i would assume that they would be even more powerful with the big rotors.

Great modulation and adjustability with the SD7 levers

Cons: Mine squeal. Ive basically accepted it as a fact of life, and most avid brakes ive used do too.

Can be grabby. Without the SD7 levers they have kind of an on/off feeling. However, with the SD7s, they modulate really well, and have every possible adjustment that you could need.

Basically, with the SD7 levers, these are by far the best you can get for your money
