The Cross-Check is a great bike. It was the third frame ever offered by Surly, and little has changed since then, why should it? So, whats this bike for? It’s a cyclocross bike by category, but its much more versatile. It comes stock with gears, but you could build it into a singlespeed or fixed-gear in needed. You can ride it on the road or off. It’s got lots of space for fat tires and for fenders and it does as good a job getting you across the country as it does getting you across town.

I beat the snot out of this bike. It is simply awesome. Very versitile. A true Jack of all trades. Not a pure bred race bike, but capable of racing. I've used this bike for commuting, touring, cross racing (one, DFL [not the bike's fault], but had fun), and mountain biking, and it's handled it all well.
I've really been impressed by the wheelset - I had doubts, but it's held up like a champ!

This is my daily commuter. It runs over any pothole, tree branch, or crackhead you put in front of it. Definitely one of the toughest coolest bikes out there. Surly has really outdone themselves on the amount of braze-ons for this ride. I especially love the new fork mount rack braze-ons. So as far as an entry level racing, commuting, touring beast thats around 1000 bucks it doesn't get much better than a cross-check. One drawback that might turn people off is the weight, but I think it makes you a better rider.
