It’s a cyclocross bike by category, but its much more versatile. It comes stock with gears, but you could build it into a singlespeed or fixed-gear in needed. You can ride it on the road or off. It’s got lots of space for fat tires and for fenders and it does as good a job getting you across the country as it does getting you across town.

This is my daily commuter. It runs over any pothole, tree branch, or crackhead you put in front of it. Definitely one of the toughest coolest bikes out there. Surly has really outdone themselves on the amount of braze-ons for this ride. I especially love the new fork mount rack braze-ons. So as far as an entry level racing, commuting, touring beast thats around 1000 bucks it doesn't get much better than a cross-check. One drawback that might turn people off is the weight, but I think it makes you a better rider.
