Comments about Diamondback Podium 6 Ultegra Bike 2013:
An AMAZING deal from Jenson.
I bought this bike at a slight discount because it was used to help veterans.
I thought I'd get a USED (read here beaten into the ground, scratched, dented two wheel mess)
What I got was THE most beautiful bicycle (I like old school with basic colors not flaahy gawdy stuff) I know of in this $2000 price range.
The bike has very sharp lines to it. The headset is angled as if you're going to do ONE lap around the oval and sit...it is sharp. This makes the bike much stiffer and twitchy relative to what it could have been with more relaxed lines. Former ride was a Schwinn Peloton with Ultegra and 853 steel (sweet) . One bike is a Cadillac the other a Formula One (I exaggerate to make a point).
But the Diamondback is so much quicker off the jump. I weigh 230lbs and can bend a frame with mybig thighs and arms. My Peloton I'd have to "load" before it would respond. I'd stand to sprint up a hill or to catch someone and there was a moment when the bottom brake would sway and then come back-a VERY compliant bike. It made me a hair slower accelarating but the comfort in the long haul was amazing. No wonder most custom leisure riders pick 853 steel for custom bikes...easy to workwith too.
Enough about the old..Bring in the new!!
The Diamonback is a jet. There is NO sway, no give. It is STIFF. I had a slight hesititancy to keep it, it was so twitchy and stiff. I found I really had to pay attention to the bike at first.
Over days I settled in and found the bike a joy. What it looses in its twichiness and stiffness it makes up in responsiveness. And the 54 fit me better than my56 cm Peloton. I'm 6 feet tall with a 34inch inseam. I found myself absolutely still on the Diamndback. Where the Peloton I was movinh back and forth trying to find a comfortable position.
THAT is the importance of fit. Fit is judged by the riders height but more importantly their leg and torsi length and the length of the bikes top tube. The Diamondback is pretty "squared" up. It doesnt have a long top tube as many of the Italian bjkes do.
If the bike had a fork with curve to it to absorb shock it would feel more comfortable and would have better characteriTics. As it is, it BEGS ti be ridder in a criterium. But I'm used to it now and I ride with more confidence and feel more in control due to better FIT.
Of course the FULL Ultegra works like a charm. It DOOESNT have a carbon searpost!!-ALUMINUM. But thats easy to replace and for many you'd want some offser to the seatpost to soften the ride.
The bike came shipped on time and FREE shipping. It was wrapped like the Hope diamamond. Jenson knows what theyre doing. A few adjustments and I was off.
Weighing 230lbs and living in the pothole capital of the world-Minneapolis, Minneasota I appreciate a strong wheels. My old wheels were Mavic CXP14. The wheel has a deep aero rim and are HEAVY. I NEVER adjusted them in 13 years of riding..HARD riding of two hours/day. I looked at the Easton wheels with reluctance because spoke count is lower with 10 speed in the back not 9 like my old bike. But after going through TWO massive potholes and not noticing any change in the Eastons I give them "thumbs up" for strength even though they are slightly heavy compared to some models.
The saddle is the biggest let down on this bike.
But who ever likes the stock saddle They should not even put one on like they do pedals.
I LOVE this bike. Finally, I did seap out the beautiful (but too narrow for my 46inch chest) handlebar. The Easton is a beauty though too narrow at 44cm and too much drop for me. The cranks are the cats meow!!.
My TREK hyper expensive for the name you buy, ALUMINUM frame owning TREK friends are way jealous. But I'm sure TREKS #1 cheat appreciates suckas buying those expensive bikes he endorsed.
ME??..I'll save my money, get a BETTER bike and make my own name.
Someone want to buy a sadde and a hanebar?!.
The rest of the bike???....well, go get your own I'm keeping THIS one!.
