Pros

  • Cheap
  • Easy To Install

Cons

Comments about Avid BB5 MTB Disc Brake:

I guess I expected them to come with levers and cable and housing. Comes with rotor and caliper and mounting hardware.

It should say clearly that no lever is included

Comments about Avid BB5 MTB Disc Brake:

These brakes were on my first full suspension mountain bike, and I was pretty happy with them. They stopped me well and were pretty durable. They're aren't as adjustable as BB7s, and ultimately I decided to go for hydraulics instead. But for the budget minded they're not a bad brake at all.

Comments about Avid BB5 MTB Disc Brake:

I use these for mtn biking and they work great.
Fairly easy to adjust and inexpensive. They are not the lightest or the highest performance. However, they will definitely stop your bike. They are cheaper to purchase upfront and if you are not adept at maintenance they will be cheaper in the long run vs. hydros.

      • Commuting

Comments about Avid BB5 MTB Disc Brake:

I have had these and BB7's. The BB7's are easier to adjust (pad adjustment from both sides) and have greater stopping power. That said, these are an upgrade from most rim brakes, they just take a bit more patience to adjust. For the extra $10-20, I would go with BB7's. That said, the price makes them attractive for a budget bike such as a commuter.

Too close in price to the Avid BB7s

      • XC MTB

Comments about Avid BB5 MTB Disc Brake:

These are on my Specialized FSR/XC. They stop the bike fine and are easy to maintain. I have BB7s on my Trek Hardtail, and for few dollars more, the BB7's are easier to adjust and seem to have a longer pad life. But the BB5s aren't bad brakes. I'm not recommending only because the BB7s are better for only a few dollars more.

        Good enough

Comments about Avid BB5 MTB Disc Brake:

If you just want disk brakes, this is as cheap as you want to get. They're good enough. Easy to work with and adjust however. The rotor came with them was just slightly tweaked, and no amount of playing with it seems to get it true, but close enough. The bike they're on isn't anything special, so why should the brakes be?

I'd say its worth spending the extra money on the BB7's for a bike to take on the trails. For farting around greenways/cities/etc, these would be perfect.
