The EC70 SL carbon road bars feature the same compact, high performance shape as the EC90 SLX3, only difference is the use of Easton's second tier carbon fiber to create a more affordable carbon handlebar option. The EC70 SL has a shallow drop and compact reach making controls easily accessible from multiple hand positions. Easton combined their EC70 carbon fiber and Taperwall technology with the Intelligent Flexibility design to create a bar that is stiff and efficient when sprinting yet provides a smooth and comfortable ride.
Most carbon bars are too expensive! When I picked up a bike that had bars too narrow for me I was left with a dilemma. Replace the bars with a wider one of the same type (a $325 expense), go with alloy or find a less expensive carbon bar.
This bar is lighter than the stock one, but is really stiff. It is great for sprinters or climbers that like to stand and crank on the bars. It has channels front and rear to keep your cables tucked in under the bar tape too. It is a shallow drop, for folks like me with inflexible lower spines.
I absolutely love this bar! The transition from the tops to the hoods is super smooth, and the drop shape is amazing! It gives you easy access to the brake levers and shifters from the drops, like an ergo bar, but gives you plenty of real estate to grab onto the drops in various locations with a neutral wrist angle, like a traditional bend bar. Plus the carbon makes for a smooth feel, It's very light, and top section being oversized like the clamp area makes for a very stiff bar.
I switched all my handlebars to carbon fiber for the subtle but noticeable reduction in vibration transmitted through the bar. Easton was a pioneer in carbon fiber handlebars which gives me some level of confidence in this bar. I had an older version on a tandem at 44mm width. After a fitting I was advised to move to a more narrow bar. The new 42mm is truly measured center to center, and turned out to be just as wide as the older version at 44mm. So I needed to drop to 40 mm to get an actual reduction in width vs my older 44. Jenson took my 42 mm return and sent a new 40mm with no problems. The new bar also has some depressions for cable routing which the old bar lacked.
