The steel Cross Check frame rides like nothing else. Its also durable and affordable. Its really hard to beat this package. But wait--add to that semi-horizontal dropouts with a derailleur hanger, "FFF" (fatties fit fine) stays so you can run big fat tires (even with fenders!), and Surlys Gnot-Rite rear spacing (132.5mm) that takes mountain and road hubs and you just made the unbeatable even more unbeatable (unbeatable-er?).

I ordered the frame online and have put on some various ultegra and 105 level parts. The bike has been great; it has personality to the way it rides and sports a classic look. I would recommend buying the frame separate and hunting for good components online. She deserves better than the stock build up although to be honest it isn't that bad. With braze on connections for pannier racks and the do it all attitude this bike has I can't see too many limitations on what you can do with it other than not having the legs. The frame is heavy yes and acceleration could use a stiffer bottom end but that's not why your riding this guy. All my mates that have taken it for a spin will not shut up about how fun it is to ride around the city. Quote '' feels like a freight train " comes up all the time. Build it up as a cross bike, a single speed, a road bike, touring, just build one and ride.

Bought this to replace a broken Charge Juicer frame. I built it up with shimano 105 STI shifters and 10 speed drivetrain that I had spare from my old bike and I'm very happy with the results.
The paintwork is very nice, it's true to size and it rides very smooth over city roads even with 700x23c tyres. For my uses there is nothing for the same great price and quality that compares to Surly.
Hopefully it lasts a little longer than my Charge did!

Great platform many uses. Powder coat finish is bomber! It will last for years!
If ever a frame and fork could be considered an heirloom this may be it.
Welds are good quality and has plenty of clearance clarence.
I liked my pals Cross check so I finally took the plunge. They are a solid value.

I am over 70 and only ride on rail trails now. I also prefer geared hubs to derailleurs. This frame has horizontal dropouts so no need for a chain tensioner. It replaces a 28-year old Fuji.

I'm a bike mechanic and I was comissioned to build a bike for someone who has not ridden in many years. They wanted a single speed that they could use for recreation/fitness and commuting on paved and hard packed dirt roads.
One of the first frame manufacturers that came to mind was Surly. What I really like about Surly is: they have designed frames that can be built for about anything you want, they use CroMoly steel made in many sizes making it easier to get a good fit, the quality is consistant and priced right.
Long story short I chose the Cross-Check, because it has road bike qualities, and can be built for use on and off pavement. It has room to accommodate fatter tires for comfort. Also, if the client decided a single speed wasn't what they really wanted, they can add a derailleur and have multiple gears.
The end result is the client couldn't be more pleased with the build. I can't wait to use the Cross-Check again.
