The Big Blue Book is a must read book for all beginers and cyclist amateurs what are willing to take a good care of their bike. The book doesn't cover only road bikes, but also mountain bikes and city bikes too.
If you have a very few to no experience in servicing a big, that's definitively the book you should have !
Be aware the book is Park tool focused and you won't find any recommendation of other brand tools. But all in all, an excellent starting point

Great book with good illustrations,you will have all the parts of your bike with the different components in the market, just wish they included a media dvd with examples of how to do must common maintenance work.
