The Giro Atmos has been a popular choice for road, ‘cross and XC riders and it is easy to see why. Giro’s wind tunnel ventilation system is a combination of active vents with exaust channels in the helmet that push cool fresh air onto the riders head and pushing out the warm air that is already inside the helmet. Keeping the head cooler and more comfortable is just the start. For safety, Giro uses an In-Mold carbon reinforced roll cage along with the In-Mold-EPS liner with polycarbonate shell. In the event of a crash, this technology allows the Giro Atmos to maintain structural integrity and offer maximum protection.

Giro uses Roc Loc 5, their best fit system, to fine tune the fit of the helmet with micro adjuster as well as the ability to offer fore/aft tilt adjustment. The interior padding is plush and uses X-Static fabric to combat bacteria and odor.

Features:

  • Wind Tunnel™ ventilation system which combines active vents with internal exhaust channels that thrust cool, fresh air over and around the riders head-while forcing heat and stale air out. This significant increase in air channeling makes a difference that riders will immediately feel and appreciate.
  • Super Fit system which is based on “human scale factors” data and nearly 20 years of crafting helmets for the best riders in the world. The result is a line of helmets that fit 98% of the worlds population, yet look and fit like they were made just for you.
  • In-mold construction fuses the helmet’s outer shell with the impact-absorbing EPS  liner. The two materials are fused together, and one is reinforced by the other. This ‘exoskeleton’ allows Giro to engineer helmets that are lighter, more durable and better ventilated.
  • Roll Cage reinforcement -- a tough web of DuPont® Nylon® molded inside a helmet’s EPS foam liner. It provides an extra measure of strength and integrity that you’ll never even notice…unless you need it.

Given the glowing reports from most of your reviewrs I was expecting a superlative fit and comfort. It is possible to adequately adjust it to your head but the internal padding is minimal leaving the unfinished plastic to rub against your head. You would have thought that with facilites at their disposal the manufacturers could have developed something better. Ventilation is good but that is not so hard to achieve. It feels secure and is well finished. With just a bit more thought going into it it could have truly excellent product.

I bought this helmet because I knew that I would be able to fit a skull cap under it on my cold rides to work and then make a quick adjustment for the ride home without the skull cap. It has lived up to my expectations perfectly.

Comments about Giro Atmos Helmet '12:

I've been riding with this helmet since 2007 after using many other helmets. This is by far the best helmet I've purchased and used consistently. It helps keep my head cool on hot days and I don't even notice that it's on my head, probably because it's so light and fits so well. I'm a double century rider and put in a lot of miles per year, about 10,000+ and always wear my Giro. On Feb 5, 2011 I was hit by a mini-van and nearly killed. I spent 10 weeks in the hospital with nearly a month in the ICU. I don't remember being hit or the first two months of my hospital visit as I had TBI with a required craniotomy to save my life. I was wearing my Giro Encinal helmet that I used for cold weather and rainy days. It was 6:30am and I had the proper lighting and following all road rules but still got hit by a driver who fell asleep at the wheel and hit me from behind at 55 mph. He called 911 or I would be dead for sure. Without the great Giro helmet I would have bean dead for sure as well. Both Giro helmets were very comfortable with the Encinal being better for cold weather riding and the Atmos perfect for the warm to hot weather.

Comments about Giro Atmos Helmet '12:

My go-to helmet for three years, the Atmos does everything well. It fits right and is extremely light. Ventilation is also excellent.

I do agree with some reviewers in that there are more "padded" helmets out there (the Mavic Plasma in particular), but the Atmos feels lighter and more minimal than those options.

Helmet fit is a personal issue and I've found the Atmos to be supremely comfortable.

After three years of solid use, the foam in the front of the helmet snapped. Not from impact, but age and sweat (I imagine...). Disappointing to have an expensive piece of equipment fail in this manner, but it more than served its miles.

Comments about Giro Atmos Helmet '12:

Was a long-time Specialized helmet user, so I was used to good forehead ventilation - but didn't want to spend the bucks on a Prevail. Tried a Bell Volt, and found the rear ventilation good, but felt like I had a heading pad on my forehead. The Atmos is far superior on ventilation. I can actually feel the air moving over all areas of my head. the tradeoff (for me) is that the pads only hit my head in a few spots (so the air can flow thru), so I get a little bit of contact pressure or rubbing in those spots. Not a real problem (at least for 90 minute rides) and totally worth it. Great helmet.

I realloy wanted to like this helmet, maybe it was because of all the other positive reviews I've read. It is lightweight, has great air flow and looks great. The only problem is that the padding on the inside is practically non-existent. Just wearing the helmet for 15 minutes hurt the top of my head. I returned this helmet because it was so uncomfortable and got one of the new Mavic Plasma SLR helmets instead and although it is heavier, it has a lot of padding and is super comfortable!

Comments about Giro Atmos Helmet '12:

Helmets are lucky. I've never crashed while wearing a helmet. If you do get an unlucky helmet, at least you're wearing a helmet when you crash.

This helmet is much lighter than my old one and a better fit. I recommend trying several helmets before buying to make sure you are getting the best fit possible. When you find he right one you won't even know it's there.

This is a great helmet for road riding and XC mtb. I've tried many others, but nothing fit or felt like the Atmos. It's so comfortable that I forget I'm wearing it. It's sleek and low profile unlike other helmets out there. There are cheaper helmets out there but you get what you pay for. Worth every penny!
