The venerable KMC Z9000 (often supplied as original equipment on many complete bikes in the $1,000 - $2,000 range) is now the KMC X9.93. Its been upgraded with a new stretch-resistant design for long life.
With "Bulls-Eye" pin riveting and heat-treated construction, these put the "S" brands to shame in "bang for the buck".
Compatible with all popular 9 speed drivetrains (Shimano, SRAM, Campagnolo)
- Chain Compatibility: 9-Speed
- Weight: 235 g
- Width: 6.6 mm
- Links: 116 links
That said, here's the pros and cons: Is it the lightest chain available? Absolutely not. Is it compatible with Shimano and SRAM 9spd? Yes it is. Does it last? In my experience, it lasts every bit as good as the low-end version from the two big S brands (Shimano HG-93 and SRAM 951). While I admire the Shimano chains for their excellent shifting and low tendency to break, they stretch faster than any of the others. Stretching is the #1 cause of drivetrain wear, because as the links get longer, the chain 'rides up' on the sprocket teeth and wear them thinner.
The price point is there with this chain. You could buy two for an equivalent premium model chain from the big S brands and change them out quicker. Meaning, not only will you get more life than having bought one premium chain, but by installing the second chain halfway through, you'll cause far less wear to your drivetrain.

Well inevtabaly I got chain suck, I was riding to meet a group in the early hours, it was dark, I removed the quick link and put the chain back on, couldn't use any gear, thought "Darn rings are worse than I thought" so rode the entire ride in my 38t ring and 32 outback, never thought to check the chain for a twist until I tried it on another bike and that gave trouble also, then I looked and found the twisted link. Cannot believe how easily this chain twisted, honestly not worth it even if it was free.
CONS: Weak, Very Weak
