I wanted to switch to a 1x9 setup, but didn't want to invest much money to test it out. The Jump Stop is cheap and does not allow the chain to drop to the inside. I paired this with a BBG bashguard (also cheap) for the outside stop.

Installation was simple. I just removed the front derailleur, cable and shifter. Then I removed the crankset and pulled the small and large rings. I put the bashguard in place of the large ring and re-installed the cranks. I also shortened the chain a little to account for the missing large ring. Once the crank was back on with the chain in place, I dialed in the Jump Stop to be almost touching the chain on it's closest path to the frame and tightened it up. Simple.

On my first ride, I hadn't tightened the Jump Stop collar enough, which allowed the stop plate when hit to be pushed in a little bit. As a result, I did drop the chain once. A quick re-adjustment to put the plate back in position and a few turns of the allen wrench to tighten it back up (fully tight this time) and I haven't dropped the chain since. I actually see this as just a great confirmation that I really did need the Jump Stop. Without it, you will drop the chain. With it, never.

Overall: Great product. Great price. For about $30, I got the Jump Stop and a BBG bashguard, simplified my bike setup, made it look cooler and shaved half a pound! You can't beat that with a stick.

I thought I can get away with a well taut chain on my MTB and this contraption... NOT! Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's a great product. Just don't buy it if you ride on uneven terrain.

It's super light and works as it's supposed to. If you do some heavier riding then go for something bigger, but for trail riding with a 1x10 drivetrain, this thing is a great fix for keeping your chain on. Also, you can't beat the price. Worth every penny.

I could see how this would be good on the one by nine set up that I have. But with the bottom bracket comfiguration on the Salsa Big Mama. It really does not work for much. It sits to high to be useful.

Comments about N Gear N-Gear Jump Stop Chain Guide:

Using this on a 11-34t rear and 22-38-53 triple front to prevent derailment. It has worked fantastically over many, many miles.

Installation is a little fiddly. Attachment to the frame, horizontal, vertical, and planar adjustment are all controlled by a single bolt/nut....and there is a little bit of natural spring in the nylon body which will fight your attempt to set it.

Take the time to dial it in properly. If you're a little off, the world isn't going to end. But when you hit just that right combo of rough pavement and shifting craziness, you will still manage to throw the chain. And it will be impossible to get the chain back on without taking the N-Gear off.

This is a more reliable solution to the same problem than "fang"-like products from Deda and 3rd Eye.

Comments about N Gear N-Gear Jump Stop Chain Guide:

I am using this product on my 1x8 set up. While not the intended use for this product it works reasonably well for this purpose. For the 1x8 set up it does prevent derailment but sometimes the jump stop will twist. It doesn't seem to matter how tight it is, it still moves. Although it only takes a few seconds to re-adjust it happens at least once on a ten mile ride. So, bottom line, a cheap easy way to convert your bike to 1x8/9 with minimal maintenance.
The intended purpose for this product is to prevent chain derailment while completing fast front sprocket shifts. I am sure for this purpose it would work very well.

Installed this piece in minutes with a bash guard on the outside of my middle ring. I have completed about 5 rides so far and my style is XC. So far I have not dropped the chain and I have rode some very rooty trails which creates a lot of chain bounce.
