Excellent urban pedals
I use these on my road bicycle. I find them awesome for riding, especially in urban areas where I have to clip in and clip out repeatedly at stops for traffic. It's so much easier to clip in after stopping at a busy intersection and trying to get off the line to progress through traffic before the light changes again...or I get whacked by a cager turning right from a side streeet. I have them on all three of my road bikes and highly recommend them for those in a similar riding environment. Out on the open road there might be better choices for power transfer or platform rigidity. However, given that no matter how much open road riding I do, I still have to navigate urban areas to get home or out to that open road. There is a trade off, but in my view, it's well worth it. Being able to clip in or out easily and without having to search for the proper side of the pedal to clip back in is worth the trade off. Considering experimenting with Candy's in the future...but they don't really look like they'd work with the road shoe adapter. Hope someone finds this review helpful

Reliable pedals
I do endurance racing and put reliability above other attributes in my equipment. These pedals will take a beating and keep going. Even in the worst conditions, they'll engage the cleats just fine.

The only thing I'll comment on regarding the durability is that they do need servicing. I like to make sure the outboard bearing shell has grease on the outside (between the shell and the pedal body) so that it can be removed later on. After a muddy race, they'll need cleaning and repacking. They'll work just fine if you don't do these things, but they won't be serviceable afterwards and will wear out in about 2,000 miles instead of the 5,000 before the spring needs replacing by Crank Brothers.

Best all around pedals, road and MTB.
I have Egg Beaters on my road and mountain bikes. I love the feel, the weight and the ease of use. Ease to clean and maintain. Works well in muddy conditions, no issues after several years of use. Also easy to rebuild with kit. I have not complaints about them at all. I have tried other products and love the Egg Beaters.

PROS: Easy clip in and out, Easy clip-in when muddy, Easy to maintain, Easy service

CONS: No platform

BEST USES: Commuting, XC, all mountain, Road

Work well, but fundamental design flaws
These are some of, if not the, best pedals for muddy conditions. They are simply impervious to it. And they're durable and very lightweight.

But they are also fundamentally flawed. The design puts a lot of pressure on the sole of the shoe. The "wings" of the pedal (the eggbeater part) dig into soles and create noticeable grooves. This is NOT GOOD for carbon-soled shoes. Once the grooves get worn in, the creaking starts...

Crank Brothers makes shim kits and a steel sole protector, but adding these take away some float and the ease of release.

PROS: Durable, Lightweight, Shed Mud

CONS: Wear Out Shoes, Creak

CONS: Heavy

My go-to pedal
Egg Beaters are my favorite mountain bike pedals for cross-country racing and trail riding. Easy entry from any angle and you know you'll always to be able to clip out at a moment's notice. Plus their open design makes them the only pedal to use in muddy conditions. These things have saved my butt when the racing got peanut-buttery. I prefer them over Candy's as I don't miss having platform when I'm wearing stiff-soled MTB shoes. I've been using Beaters for years and years and they've survived some good rock-bashings with no problem.

Bullet Proof
I have ridden Egg Beaters from the very beginning and they have never failed me. Some people complained in the early years about durability, but I guess I was lucky because I rode one pair more than ten years without issue. Crank Brothers claims they have improved durability big time with new production facilities, so they can only get better. I am currently riding a new set of 3s, which I installed last November. They are flawless.

PROS: Lightweight, Reliable Entry/Exit, Dual Sided Entry

CONS: No tension adjustment

Strong, light and care-free.
As the title indicates, the best attributes I can think of is that they are incredibly strong, yet light in weight. At 190lbs (including camelbak and shoes) and very aggressive riding I have cracked many mtb frames, but my SS egg beaters have put up with all my hard landings and rock hitting I have thrown at them. I have SS eggbeaters in all my mountain bikes, and I also have a pair of Ti eggbeaters I limit to racing use only (as I trust steel more than the crazy light Titanium). Mud and gravel a non issue with these pedals given its design. Concerns- without the shoe shields (metal plate to protect the contact of the pedals against your soles), your shoes (at least with carbon soles) will begin to show wear where the pedal touches the sole). This can easily be addressed by using these steel shields (at 4grams each). FYI- the brass cleats provide a 6 degree float which works great for me, but some riders want 0 float. Also, on my primary bike, I replace the internals (bearings and all included on rebuild kit) once a year. I proactively do this given the amount of abusive riding I do (as I also replace my chains and cassette). But the best attribute yet is Crank Brothers' customer service. They will take the time to talk with you at length with any questions/issues you may have. My springs were getting a little loose on an older pair, I called them, they asked me to send them in, and they put new springs and completely rebuilt at no cost. I felt a little guilty as I felt it was just wear and tear, but they insisted and I complied :) I hope this helps!

PROS: Rocks-gravel--no Issue, Light, Strong, Mud--no Issue, Top value, Care-free

CONS: Sole Chewing-without Plat

Great Looking and Performing Pedals
Lightweight pedals. Ride them on my XC bike. Engagement was stiff initially but after a few rides it "broke in" and engagement is now smooth. Was riding Frog speedplay previously which had a little play. I actually prefer these pedals without play, as it inspires more pedalling confidence i.e. no walking on ice feeling.

The speedplay frogs claim to have a large if not the largest pedaling platform, I don't feel any difference when using the eggbeaters. Will prefer the eggbeaters anytime.

PROS: Very light, Easy engagement, Sheds Mud Naturally, Looks like a piece of art

Love these pedals!
I recently installed these on my 2012 Trek Mamba and I couldn't be happier. They are compact, light and shed mud\muck very well. These pedals are made to be rebuildable which is also nice. I also appreciate the feature of dual-sided entry. It reduces the time searching for the enagagement as with other pedal models. Highly recommended!

PROS: Adjustable, Shed mud easily, Durable, Lightweight

CONS: Not street shoe friendly

BEST USES: Mud, Water
