Comments about Shimano 105 RD-5701 Rear Derailleur:

Had an older 105 on the bike, wanted to ensure many more years of functionality so got the medium cage (I run a triple) and wanted to use my new 11-28 cassette as well. This went on easy and setup was simple. This medium cage version has the exact same sizing as the "long cage 105" that was on my bike.

Comments about Shimano 105 RD-5701 Rear Derailleur:

Precision shifting as good as higher priced derailleurs. Paired with Ultegra chain & Sram 1070 12-32 cassette. Operates perfectly.

Comments about Shimano 105 RD-5701 Rear Derailleur:

Out on a ride for the first time this season, had it in a high gear so there was not alot of torque on it and the rear derailleur snapped right at the axle, it was grinding between the spokes and the year fork of my 2013 Trek Domain Full Carbon Fiber bike, tearing up the year fork and leaving me stranded on my ride. The only upside is it is a cheap component but I would not buy this brand or product again nor would I recommend anyone else purchase this.

Comments about Shimano 105 RD-5701 Rear Derailleur:

My Trek came fitted with 105 components all around. A couple times a year I'll clean road grime out of the derailleurs and the original 105 rear derailleur has kept going strong since 2012. I have no complaints about its performance. You treat it right and it will always work as intended.

Comments about Shimano 105 RD-5701 Rear Derailleur:

The short-arm (SS) 105 derailleurs work nicely with 24-inch wheels on kid-sized bikes. I do a lot of riding on fine-gravel rails-to-trails routes with my family, and I had a hell of a time with sand and gravel kicked up into my kids rear derailleur. It messed up his chain too and required frequent cleaning.

I switched out to short-arm Shimano 105 rear derailleur last summer and it's made all the difference. That extra two inches of height off the trail made such a difference in keeping my kids gears clean. I go for days at a time without having to clean and relube the rear gear set.

It would probably help on my 26-inch wheels too, but for the 24s it's a total necessity.
