The best MTB rear derailleur on the market is now even better! "Shadow" rear derailleurs track closer to the cassette, improving ground and obstacle clearance for enhanced durability.
  • Traditional top-normal (not Rapid Rise) type
  • Reduces the instances of the derailleur hitting the chainstay in very bumpy terrains
  • Works with any Shimano 9sp shifter, but best with trigger-type (not Dual Control) shifters
  • claimed 180 grams - thanks to new weight-saving features like carbon fiber

Expensive piece of junk

By Jcycling

from Orange County, CA

Pros

  • looks cool
  • Shifts Well When Dialed I

Cons

  • Repairs Cost-prohibitive
  • very expensive
  • very fragile

Best Uses

  • Hanging on wall
  • On-road Riding

Yeah it might shift well when dialed in and look cool while doing it, but plan to do only fire road and on-road riding. I'm not a crazy aggressive rider but enjoy single track riding. Although I don't remember doing so, I must have hit a rock which broke the knuckle (bottom) of the outside cage so the chain no longer stays on the bottom pulley wheel. Shimano wants $175 to replace 1 cage!! Crazy and stupid! A new derailleur will cost $190 on most websites. Remind me to never buy Shimano's stuff again.

Great Derailleur, A bit pricey

By Ray

from Berkeley

Verified Reviewer

Pros

  • Light
  • Rebuildable
  • Reliable

Cons

  • Expensive

Best Uses

Great shifting paired with slx shifters. Kind of expensive, but the best there is. One of the best features is that it can be completely disassembled to be cleaned and rebuilt.

had the 972 on my Yeti for one full season, it was easy to set up and tune. it has not missed a shift in over 500+ miles of hard riding. the only con might be the price.. but you really do get what you pay for!

    Don´t buy it!

Mine spoiled in one month! I ride MTB´s since 1990 and it was the first time that something made by shimano disappointed me. But the true is that since I tried SRAM few years ago it´s difficult to come back to shimano.

    By Bryan

    from Medfrod, Wi Usa

This is probably a fine derailleur for western riding. I do not recommend it for east coast or mid west riding. A stick went into the derailleur as I was riding. This is a common occurrence on mid west trails. The stick ruined the derailleur. Most other derailleurs will shrug off a stick with no problem.
