Renthal Duo Stem

The Renthal Duo stem reaches bicycling nirvana by being both light weight and very strong. You will notice that the Renthal Duo is horizontally divided and that allows Renthal to machine away material without compromising strength. Renthal uses CNC machined 6082 T6 aluminum and incorporates a U-shaped cradle clamp to eliminate handlebar stress risers that can be found with traditional stems. This yields a package that weighs 143 grams (including bolts) and will stand up to the punishment your riding will dish out.

      Comments about Renthal Duo Stem:

Aggressive rider on aggressive trails with a hardtail and I tend to beat the tar out of my beloved SC Chameleon. First off, if you dont own a proper torque wrench, get that before you get this stem. Second, if you tend to throw the instructions away like I do, make an exception here. Be meticulous in the installation of this stem and it will reward you with strength and stiffness without weight. The times I've had to make trail-side adjustments have resulted in creaks. They go away once the stem has been re-installed at home base. Have Nevr-seze? Get some. You should be using it on all your fasteners anyway. This stem will make you a better rider AND mechanic.

      Comments about Renthal Duo Stem:

It's a good product. If coming from a long stem (70mm to 100mm), the shorter length stem (50mm) will change the bike's handling. Steering will be quicker. It looks good with Renthal Fatbar Lite Bars and Renthal Kevlar Lock-on Grips.

Downside is that it can be difficult to install and adjust because of its design. More specifically, the bottom screws are not easily accessible as compared to other designs.

      Comments about Renthal Duo Stem:

I am a 45 year old who rides 3 - 4 times a week... aggressive trail riding would be a fair descriptor of how I ride.

FWIW, I'm also an engineer, so I can be a little over analytic of my mtb gear.

I purchased this stem because it seemed to offer the combination of weight and spec I was looking for, the unique design and looks were a bonus. I was also aware that this product had a mixed reputation, mostly due to creaking, supposedly when the stem is not installed 'properly'.

I decided to take a chance and unfortunately discovered that the creaking was in fact a problem with mine as well, not due to assembly, torque, grease etc... but because of the design. Even after assembling according to Renthal's instructions several times.. cleaning, greasing torquing to spec in the proper sequence, etc... IT JUST CREAKS.

The creaking occurs under side to side type of loading (like on a climb/sprint when your weight shifts between the left and right grips repeatedly).

The creak is a product of the 2 halves of the stem slipping against one another under the twisting force described above.

Without getting too technical about this... due to manufacturing tolerances, the fact is some units may not creak/shift perceptibly, but many will... its kind of a roll of the dice whether you'll get a 'creaker'.

Renthal really need to have a mechanical feature to lock/align the 2 halves together once assembled.

For 100 bucks, there are better options.

      Comments about Renthal Duo Stem:

I bought this stem to try a 50mm stem and because I thought it looked cool, which it does. It works as well as any other stem, but it's creaky and more difficult to install than a typical 4 bolt plate style stem. I probably won't buy anymore stems of this style.

This is a very nice stem, it's very lightweight and I personally love the design. The installation was really quite simple despite all the screws and once it's set it's really sturdy.

I ride aggressive and wanted a shorter stem that would also stiffen up my front end. The Renthal Duo stem exceeded my expectations because it was stiff and incredibly light. After a summer of riding, I have had no issues with this product.
