Shimano LX M581 Rear Derailleur

This is a traditionally-sprung rear derailleur designed to complement standard trigger or twist shifters. Shimano shifting technology keeps your drivetrain shifting nice and smooth.

  • 9 Speed compatible (works just dandy with 7 or 8, or even Shimano Road 10 speed as well)
  • Long (SGS) Cage for usage with triple cranks. (Will work with double or single ring drivetrains as well)
  • Sturdy Alloy Construction
  • Approximate weight claimed 275 grams

Just ok

It's a nine speed that claims its good for 7 and 8 too. Works but not as well as old one designed for 7 speed

Comments about Shimano LX M581 Rear Derailleur:

After the first few rides, this derailleur continues to shift crisply without fail. My old derailleur had seen its day years ago, so this is a huge improvement. To get this piece of equipment, which was better than my original Shimano Deore when new, at this price was an excellent value and upgrade to the old equipment.
This isn't the latest piece of equipment, and I don't have a lot to compare to, but this provides excellent value and meets my needs as a weekend warrior.

I had this derailleur installed on my Trek Wahoo 29er. It's much, much better than the stock and it is a fast, smooth shifter. I don't see how you can do better for under 40 bucks.

Comments about Shimano LX M581 Rear Derailleur:

use this LX on 2 rebuilt mountain to commuter bikes year round in north. will survive 90 to sub zero temps! no plastic in stressed areas. both units wrangle 11/34 cassettes. my rigid bike is paired 1x9 with xt shifter. CRISP shifting.
my 2x9 squishy paired with deore shifter is smooth. deore shifter is more forgiving of adjustment. shimano web site has exploded diagram of this. tech tip. can remove P screw from knuckle and turn spring into other hole to get more tension on chain. then its more like xt version of same generation. great unit if you dont need shadow for trails

After installing the Shimano Lx M581 Rear Derailleur,Shimano 7-SPEED Freewheel and the Kmc Z-51 Hg & Ig Compatible Chain to upgrade my wife's old Schwinn World Sport because it had become hard shifting 6 speed clunker...Now she says its feels like and even better 7 speed fun road bike that shifts like butter...just like it did when it was new only better with 7 gears now.

I installed this LX mountain derailleur on my gravel grinding/long distance recreational road bike with an 11-34 cassette, compact crank and down-tube shifters. It works great and it's silver rather than black or silver/black. It's good looking, dependable and inexpensive, what more can I ask?
