Great SPD pedal for when you need to clip in and out on the trails. The design for the platform allows for the cleat to rest in properly, and for those rare times that you don't, there is enough of an outer platform to keep your feet in place.

Outer platform helps with long rides, since my MTB shoes aren't as stiff.

I've been an SPD user on my mountain bikes for years (520s), with generally good experience. Always a little difficult for me to "find" in the moment, but always reliable release (especially with the SH56 cleats). Have been using Crank Bros Mallets for a couple years now. Love the platform and ease of "finding". But very disappointed with failures to release. Not many - but more than with the SPD's, & usually with some level of consequence to the ol' bod. Opted to go back to SPD's with the PD530s, for several reasons. First; the more reliable release. Second; so I could still get some platform like with the Mallets. Third; because the 520s were always easy to use & reliable. As usual, the SPD's are difficult for me to "find", but then to add insult to injury, they're very difficult to engage. I need to stomp to engage. And this with adjustment light enough for a few pre-releases (purposefully). I can't see any evidence of mis-manufacturing on either the pedals or cleats (brand new SH56's). I don't know what the story is. Frankly, I'm tired of fussing with it all. So as a result - I think I'm done with clipless. As with my hard-tails - I'm going flats.

Comments about Shimano PD M530 SLX Trail Clipless Pedal:

I purchased these as a temporary solution until I figured out exactly which $100+ pedals I wanted to buy. After riding them through aggressive single track and freeride trails, I'm finding that I don't need to buy other pedals. They work great, have reliable entry and release, and are holding up. The platform is a little small compared to freeride oriented clipless pedals, but I haven't experienced any issues while riding.
    Great value, great product.

Comments about Shimano PD M530 SLX Trail Clipless Pedal:

Ride 3 days a week variety of trails from wide singletrack to rough Rocky vertical terrain and have used the M520 and M540 for years. Decided to give these a try though skeptical about the utility of the platform. Once clipped, they feel just like the non-platform versions. The biggest riding difference for me is re-starting on a hill, going up or down. Much more control before you have the chance to clip in. That alone makes me prefer this pedal, but there are other plusses. The outer edge is blank where the 520/540 has a plastic plug that inevitably gets beat to a pulp, and the pedal is ridiculously easy to service; I can disassemble lube and reassemble both sides without removing from the crank in 2 minutes. Oh, and they come with a set of cleats, so you are paying how much for the pedals? Get them.

Comments about Shimano PD M530 SLX Trail Clipless Pedal:

I love these pedals. I have these on my commuter and the XT version on my trail bike (SB-95). Maybe it is just mental, but the extra platform gives a much more solid foot-pedal interface. I ride Specialized MTB Pro shoes (2011ish and 2014 versions) and the treads do not interfere with engagement. For this price, you can't get a better pedal. About to buy my 3rd pair for my downhill bike. Sure the XTs are better, but I am not sure if they are worth the added cost.

Comments about Shimano PD M530 SLX Trail Clipless Pedal:

Ok, I know the title says they're worth it, and if you shell out some cash, you can achieve a lighter pedal, but these were unexpectedly chunky. I don't want to knock them for "unreliable entry/exit", because they ARE consistent, but they do seem...more difficult than SPD's I've used in the past, despite tension adjustment. I also thought there would be more of a feel to the added platform area, but I can't feel any difference over my 520's (perhaps it's the worn down tread of my shoes?). Regardless, these are an amazing buy and the quality in construction you'd expect from the one and only creators of SPD. It should also be noted that although a bit heavier, due to the design, it protects the clip mechanism from unexpected clashes/damage from the ever abundant and sometimes unavoidable rocks of AZ. Bought these in white, they look great. Highly recommend even with the criticism.

Grate pedals, I have them on my main FS-MTB.
Very good and easy to use with clipped to MTB shoe.
When riding with different shoes or sandals even easy rides with the kids the grip is very loos, missing some spikes to have some friction.
On the trail when hitting a rock with the pedals the easily released.

These pedals are very good. They have lasted me throughout several crashes and many bumps. Even when I crashed and was thrown from the bike the pedals did not hold on to my feet and I didn't get crushed by the bike.

Newbie to mountain biking, mainly ride single track and some downhill, I wanted to become more unified w/ my bike, these were an easy transition into clipless pedals. These also provide a larger more platform that provides increased confidence. I would definitely buy them again!
