Over the past 10 years the BB-7 has been slightly refined and tweaked to suit the target market. The newest model builds on some of the past versions weaknesses but adds a few new issues.
On older models, the included rotors had large vented areas which helps to shed mud from the pads more effectively. Over time the adjusting knobs can become quite stiff which can make adjustments less convenient. If the cables are not maintained they can begin to feel "gummy" - these brakes require a good cable set-up to have the proper feel.
On the plus side, these brakes are strong and offer excellent modulation. They are reliable and last for many years if they are maintained and taken care of. The adjustable pads result in an easier and faster set-up than a hydraulic system since you can individually adjust the distance of each pad from the rotor.

OK, this is a fantastic derailleur that works very well. My first of the Shadow style. I give it 3 stars because I spent extra for a shorter cage length (GS model) that is only 10 mm shorter than the SGS, and the instructions don't include anything about the 2nd pivot point and mounting of the derailleur to the dropout. I'm mechanically inclined, it took me a test ride and a close inspection to get it all dialed. SHimano, Where are the setup vids on Pinkbike or VitalMTB? Oh and I like rapid-rise. THis is only offered in the classic style as far as I could tell.

Comments about Shimano Deore XT M772 Rear Derailleur:
Here is the short of it:
+new low profile design
- everything else. This new design is lacking the barrel adjuster on the derailleur itself. Shimano gave this a new design, skipped some important features and increased the price by 50%! Really, nearly a hundred for an XT and it sings like a cheap coffee grinder. It makes my titanium hardtail horrible. Likely the last Shimano derailleur that I buy cause I have had enough of this new design.

this is a good reliable rear derailleur for a great price. Only thing I wish it had was the new clutch feature on the newer derailleurs.

this is my second xt rear der. The first one lasted through 4 bikes over 8 years. My Sram x9 rear der only lasted a year before the pivots wore out and would no longer hold a gear.

Comments about Shimano Deore XT M772 Rear Derailleur:
I'm a 5'9", 160-lb guy who who does not finesse his way through the woods. I ride single-track pretty brazenly, often riding at the edge of my abilities. And I look for opportunities to get airborne. This is simply to say that even though I'm light, I'm not easy on my bikes; I pound on 'em.
Hence, I'm not usually in the market for the lightest component. I like to strike a balance between ruggedness, functionality, and price. I don't try to shave a few grams by spending an additional $200. So, the XT line of components is often where I look first.
I've built two bicycles with the M772 XT rear derailleur now, and I have nothing but good things to say about them. They are straightforward to install (if you're used to doing your own wrenching), easy to adjust, and remain in tune. I put more than 4 years of riding on my last XT RD, and the only thing it ever asked for was a cable replacement once, when the cable and housing got corroded inside. Aside from that, it simply kept shifting and shifting, with an occasional turn of the barrel adjuster on the shifter. Simple. The low profile prevents snags. And the rugged construction survived more crashes than I care to recall.
Note: When you first install this thing, do so in a well-lit area. The black paint makes the markings and inside of the body hard to see, so setting the high/low limit screws can be difficult in dim environments. So build yours up outdoors, at noon.
Note 2: I pair mine with XT shifters...
