The PD-M647 pedal is great for slalom, downhill, BMX, and other applications where you want a clipless mechanism but still want the stability of having a platform pedal. The dual sided pop-up binding positions the pedal body at a 12.5 degree angle for easy and fast entry.
The high-impact resin cages provide grip and wont grab mud. The spindle is chromoly for strength with a reinforced steel collar. SPD Cleats are included.

What a difference a pedal makes! I had the Crankbrothers egg beater pedals on my bike for the last two years and after several bad falls I was ready to go back to a solid platform pedal. Then I came across these and thought it would be the best of both worlds. I like being able to have control clipped out, which these offer. I like being able to adjust the tension in the pedals which I could NOT do before. Now I clip in and out with ease and am no longer too terrified to use clipless pedals. I paired them with the Shimano SH56 multi-directional cleats and they haven't let me down...I finally have the confidence to ride clipless that I didn't before. I was worried they'd be too heavy when I compared them to my old ones, but in the end it makes no difference. I don't race though, so not as concerned about weight...if you race it might be an issue. Due to their size I have scuffed them on rocks a couple of times...but that was partially due to bad riding form on my part, and also getting used to riding with larger pedals again...they are not too big by any means, just a matter of getting used to them. One of the times I scuffed over a rock it was a really hard hit but they held up, the plastic is very durable. All in all a great product and I'd really recommend for someone who is converting from platform to clipless. Had I gotten these two years ago I would've saved a few scars and bumps and bruises...and would've been much more confident on clipless from day one!

Comments about Shimano PD-M647 Pedals:
I was looking for a clipless pedal with a large enough platform that I could occasionally ride without cleats. These are perfect, and I've found the platform very helpful when starting from a difficult spot like a rocky/rooty uphill. You can easily get a couple cranks in before engaging your cleats.

Wow! Smooth entry and exit, tough, and light considering what they are built for! Lots of other gimmickie systems out there, but only one you can count on every time- Shimano.

I use these on my XC bike. They are great for control while on the trail and fantastic for riding to work with combat boots on. The platform is really large and makes it easy to keep going up if you miss the clip in. I love how easy they are to get in and out of - I use the multi-direction cleat from Shimano.

Comments about Shimano PD-M647 Pedals:
I threw these on my mountain bike after my previous pedal's axle broke during service, and the replacement would have cost more than new pedals.
These are the same style as the classic 424, but have an open cleat interface, and a much more robust axle assembly. Instead of the plastic sleeve/preload adjuster found on the lower end shimano pedals, this model has a metal sleeve. In the past, I had no issue with the plastic sleeve, but as they had apparently broke below the knurled bit, it became impossible to use or service the previous pedals. The 647s should not suffer from this problem.
My only ding against these pedals is their size and weight. They are not a small form factor, nor are they particularly light (though more so than the other pedals of this type that Shimano makes). Their robustness means extra weight, but is a fair trade off in my mind, for a wide platform and solid construction.

Well worth the price compared to others. No comparison to the PD 424 (entry level), own both pedals. Like my PD 520's on my road bike, but for my Focus Black Forrest the PD 647 are the best. Will be 65 in April and going strong. Thanks JensenUSA

Comments about Shimano PD-M647 Pedals:
These pedals are great. Having the platform available for when you either choose to unclip or accidently pop out is nice. I like the plastic platforms, I feel they can take a beating with some 'give' instead of being of metal design, sure they get scuffed up but scuff is better then bent in my opinion. So far they have shed mud nicely.

Comments about Shimano PD-M647 Pedals:
I ran these pedals for a season of downhill racing. They provided good support for my feet and contributed to confidence on the bike. The cages wear down and develop play, and I had to remove these pedals from service after about 6 months of racing every weekend.
