I have been using CrankBrothers for 5 years now and never had problems with it and I don't even maintain it. Contrary to what one of the reviewers here said about them breaking off, the Candy 1 will work best for road or light trail riding. Anything else than that and you should use the CB Mallet which I use for serious technical trail and downhill riding at the North Shore and Whistler bike park.

They are initially great to use- very good in muddy conditions as there is lots of internal clearance for mud. I love the amount of float too. However, after 2 pairs of eggbeaters and 2 pairs of candies have snapped spindles, I've had enough. I can really do without the injuries they cause, and the associated time off the bike, not to mention the long walk/roll/1-leg-pedal back home when they break. I've heard first hand reports of others snapping plenty of spindles on these pedals as well. I gave up on the EBs while ago after a couple of snappage incidents, and swapped to Candies, but 2 spindle breakages in the past 7 months leads me to conclude that CB pedals have a serious design fault- weak/faulty/undersized spindles. They have all broken in the same place (see photo), so it is clearly a weakness in the design of these pedals. On Sunday the snapped left spindle gave my left thigh a very nasty greasy gouging (see photo) with plenty of blood and a big bruise on the back of my right thigh from the top tube or saddle when I went down. Last September I somehow managed to stay on the bike when a right spindle snapped whilst sprinting up a slope (different set of pedals), but had extensive bruising on the back of my left thigh and some strained arm muscles.
In every case the spindles have snapped when I was out of the saddle riding hard up a slope. I don't do big air- in fact I rarely get the wheels off the ground at all other than for the occasional log or rock, and weigh 78-80kg. I ride 150-200km/week on my Litespeed and Maverick, mainly on quiet remote dirt roads in fairly hilly terrain, and farm tracks with a bit of ST made by the cows. One pair snapped after less than 2500km, and the others at just under 8000km.
Would I recommend them? Only to someone who rode gently around on smooth roads, never pedalled out of the saddle and weighed under 50kg. I don't know anyone like that...

These work well. However are mostly comprised of plastic so longevity may be an issue. The pedal works well, has a platform and easy entry and exit, great for beginners.

tad difficult to clip into vs eggbeater

        By Chad105

Comments about CrankBrothers Crank Brothers Candy 1 Pedals:

I switched from a standard crank bros egg beater pedal to these and found they are a little difficult to clip into since you have the composite body to mess with. Although, when you have to quickly stand on your pedal they are much more stable than my eggbeaters (you won't roll off the pedal). I use mine for all mountain/XC stuff and am satisfied with them. I think if they fixed the composite body to the pedal so the pedal clips were in the same spot everytime it would make them easier to clip into, but there must be a reason why they don't do that.

Comments about CrankBrothers Crank Brothers Candy 1 Pedals:

These were my first clipless pedals, and I've since switched to Shimanos. I liked that they were easy to use--you can click in and out easily--and the platform is nice for some additional foot support.

I gave them up, though, because they didn't last for me. One side of the spring broke pretty quickly, and sometimes striking a log with the pedal would cause my foot to disengage.

Also, I wish that Crank Bros would make the spindle compatible with a regular pedal wrench. As is, you have to use a 6mm allen wrench to get them on and off, but the pedal wrench gives you a lot more leverage.

Comments about CrankBrothers Crank Brothers Candy 1 Pedals:

These look great, but they are really one of the worst products I have ever used.

The platform is entirely useless as it provides next to no contact with any shoe. And the whole pedal started to come apart just a few weeks after installation. The bearings have a lot of friction in them. They never spin freely and even the lowest end Shimano pedals are much, much better.

Comments about CrankBrothers Crank Brothers Candy 1 Pedals:

I replaced my SPD pedals with these, and have been very happy so far. Extremely light for the price, and the added platform over the Eggbeaters is welcome. I just wish the entire platform was used like the older Candy's. The new shape on these only contact your shoe on the center "square" area, and not the ends of the platform.
