I recently installed these on my 2012 Trek Mamba and I couldn't be happier. They are compact, light and shed mud\muck very well. These pedals are made to be rebuildable which is also nice. I also appreciate the feature of dual-sided entry. It reduces the time searching for the enagagement as with other pedal models. Highly recommended!

These are some of, if not the, best pedals for muddy conditions. They are simply impervious to it. And they're durable and very lightweight.
But they are also fundamentally flawed. The design puts a lot of pressure on the sole of the shoe. The "wings" of the pedal (the eggbeater part) dig into soles and create noticeable grooves. This is NOT GOOD for carbon-soled shoes. Once the grooves get worn in, the creaking starts...
Crank Brothers makes shim kits and a steel sole protector, but adding these take away some float and the ease of release.

Lightweight pedals. Ride them on my XC bike. Engagement was stiff initially but after a few rides it "broke in" and engagement is now smooth. Was riding Frog speedplay previously which had a little play. I actually prefer these pedals without play, as it inspires more pedalling confidence i.e. no walking on ice feeling.
The speedplay frogs claim to have a large if not the largest pedaling platform, I don't feel any difference when using the eggbeaters. Will prefer the eggbeaters anytime.

There is a slight learning curve with these pedals having used Looks and Speedplays. The cleats are adjustable for release angle but don't release as easily as my Speedplays.

Comments about CrankBrothers Crank Brothers Egg Beater 3 Pedals:
As the title indicates, the best attributes I can think of is that they are incredibly strong, yet light in weight. At 190lbs (including camelbak and shoes) and very aggressive riding I have cracked many mtb frames, but my SS egg beaters have put up with all my hard landings and rock hitting I have thrown at them. I have SS eggbeaters in all my mountain bikes, and I also have a pair of Ti eggbeaters I limit to racing use only (as I trust steel more than the crazy light Titanium). Mud and gravel a non issue with these pedals given its design. Concerns- without the shoe shields (metal plate to protect the contact of the pedals against your soles), your shoes (at least with carbon soles) will begin to show wear where the pedal touches the sole). This can easily be addressed by using these steel shields (at 4grams each). FYI- the brass cleats provide a 6 degree float which works great for me, but some riders want 0 float. Also, on my primary bike, I replace the internals (bearings and all included on rebuild kit) once a year. I proactively do this given the amount of abusive riding I do (as I also replace my chains and cassette). But the best attribute yet is Crank Brothers' customer service. They will take the time to talk with you at length with any questions/issues you may have. My springs were getting a little loose on an older pair, I called them, they asked me to send them in, and they put new springs and completely rebuilt at no cost. I felt a little guilty as I felt it was just wear and tear, but they insisted and I complied :) I hope this helps!

Excellent product and very easy to install. I didn't give it five stars because there is a better model, the cobalt 11 that is made of Titanium. However, for the price and in stainless steel, this is a good buy. I also really like the eggbeater design so it was perfect.

These are the second pair of Egg Beater 3's I've purchased in the last six months...The first pair went on my winter beater for use in snow and this pair I purchased for my cyclocross bike to use in a local spring classic that was a mudbath...They work exceptionally well in the mud...While other people were struggling to get in and out of their pedals (especially Shimano pedal users), I was entering and exiting with relative ease...The only issues I've had with both pairs of Egg Beaters are the "stainless" steel parts of the pedals have started to rust and they come from the factory under-greased and both pairs of pedals had play in the bearings right from the factory...Since I purchased my first pair from a Canadian distributor late last year and this pair from Jenson, an American company, it can be concluded that this probably isn't an anomoly in manufacturing one lot of pedals but rather it's more likely that this is how all their pedals are [*]..Be sure to check and adjust the bearings before you use them and to spray a thin coating of grease on them to avoid rust...

I have ridden these pedals since '96 when they were brand new. I have 7 pairs on all of my bikes. I have not had a bad experience with them yet. They are super easy to get in and out of. The self lubricating brass cleats make them almost trouble free. They are super easy to service when they do need new bearings or lubrication. Simple and open so there are no tricky guesses about what is going on inside the cleat mechanism and no trouble shedding mud of all types, from Mississippi sludge to the thick brick clay of the desert southwest, they just clear it all out with little or no hesitation. When I get a new bike, I will be getting pair number 8 of these pedals. I have ridden them while living in D.C., Baltimore, Durango, Albuquerque, Craig and Steamboat springs. Always happy to be riding with them.

I have a set of these on my Pinarello Prince. I switched from a pair of Shimano pedals to try something different. I am extremely pleased with them.

Comments about CrankBrothers Crank Brothers Egg Beater 3 Pedals:
To be honest when i first bought these pedals I only bought them to not have a shimano pedal just to try something different. After riding them they were amazing. As far as engagment and disengagment alot easier to get used to. The cleats can adjust to two different floats which is nice for rider style and preferrance. Also the strength of these pedals are nice. I have smashed the ears of the pedals agasint rocks countless times and have not had a issue. My pedals are coming on 1.5 yrs old still run smooth and no issues.
