The HG94 is Shimano's new XT-level chain specifically designed to work with the Dyna-Sys 10 speed MTB drivetrain. Shimano developed Dyna-Sys with the goal of increasing rider efficiency. This means closer ratios, smoother shifts, and a more stable pedal stroke. This chain is directional for maximum shifting performance, for use with Dyna-Sys cassettes only.
  • Inner and outer plates have an asymmetrical design for optimum front and rear shifting
  • New design has better mud-shedding capabilities than current chains
  • Directional chain--install with the logos outside
  • Durability thanks to Zinc-alloy plating
  • For use with 10 speed Shimano Dyna-Sys drivetrains only, not for road use
  • Uses standard connecting pins

Ok, sure, it works as expected. It shifts great and lasts long for a reasonable price. However, where this chain falls short is with their connect system. When others (SRAM and KMC) have found chain link nirvana (by way of their quick link system) Shimano continues to use this break off pin design requiring a new pin for each chain removal.
I like to take my chain off when giving my bike a good cleaning or replacing a derailleur so the quick link system is awesome and the Shimano system seems ancient.
If you put it on and leave it on then I guess it doesn't matter. But, for me, SRAM offers a better designed product for less money.

What can I say except its a classic chain that is proven time and again. Shimano quality, decent weight for the price and goes on in no time. I go through numerous chains a season and have had NO problems with a Shimano chain ever. I use the HG pins which hold extremely well and carry a master link if I ever have trouble.

Not even close to the performance of the KMC X10.93 when used on the new SLX drive train. I fooled with it for 2 hours and put the KMC back on. Shifts are slow and rough. And yes I did install it going the correct direction.

Comments about Shimano CN-HG94 MTB 10 Speed Chain:

I bought this thinking it was a good deal and got a new chain breaker to go with it for my first 10 speed group (SLX/XT/Zee). Installed fine just like any other chain, decently quiet when well lubed, and provides decent shifting. Over the last 100 miles its broken on me 3 times. I read some other reviews online and I am not the only one. Apparently this is one of the first generations of Shimano's 10 speed mountain bike chains and the lack of refinement shows. Do yourself a favor and get something else. I got a SRAM 1071, hopefully it'll do as well as the other SRAM chains I've had.

Have Shimano Deore cassette so thought I'd put on the HG94 chain since I got a good deal on two of them. I had a KMC that seemed OK but it now shifts smoother and I did put on the KMC MissingLink 10R that is just great because it's a snap to take the chain off.
