GT Bikes Zaskar 9R Pro 2012

Since day one GT has been no stranger to the rugged, untamed world of mountain biking. As an industry leader in technology, GT has made a name for itself by consistently setting the standards by which the competition obeys. GT does not only strive for success in the Elite level of racing, but at all levels and disciplines for all riders. Take a gander at the 2012 Zaskar 9R Pro, and you’ll be quick to notice this to be true.

The GT has laid the foundation for the Zaskar Niner Pro with a lightweight hydroformed Speed Metal™ aluminum frame, with a triple triangle design and a superior cross country riding geometry. The Zaskar is outfitted with a Fox Float 29 fork with a FIT cartridge and RLC controls.

GT wanted to provide a versatile setup with incomparable performance and value to captivate recreational riders and racers alike. With that said, the Zaskar comes with Shimano XT shifters and front and rear derailleurs for unparalleled ergonomics and precise, fast, and smooth shifting. The XT crank features a 38/26T setup for a wide range of gear options specifically for 29er riding.

When your horse gallops as fast as the Zaskar 9R Pro, optimum stopping power is mandatory, which is why GT puts its faith in the the Formula R1X disc brakes and brake levers. The Formula RX brakes are sure to bring the Zaskar to a complete halt once you’re finished with your ride. Other goodies can be found throughout including a WTB Silverado saddle, Maxxis Aspen tires, and Crank Brothers seat post and handlebars.

The award winning components combined with an excellent geometry, create an efficient bike that will absorb the bumps the trail may throw your way, and provide you with hours of fun each time you take it out for a spin.

Comments about GT Bicycles GT Bikes Zaskar 9R Pro 2012:

6'3" 260# athletic build rider. I need a bike that can handle what I put it through, and so far this bike has met that. The head angle of the zaskar with the 29" wheel makes this bike very responsive and very squarely if your not ready for it. As such riding this does demand some level of confidence for technical runs and tight turns, but if you have the skill this bike won't hold you back. The Fox is great but a remote lockout would sure make the lockout more "useable". I have to comment on how happy I am with the XT drivetrain. I am specifically very happy with the brakes. at 260 i put a demand on these things that a lesser unit can't handle well. Bike is spec'd incredibly.

My concern with this bike was the assembly. Go over the bike before you ride. My front wheel was significantly out of true. My ear derailed was way out of alignment and bent. lastly the springs in my rear skewer were installed backwards and part of the spring was stuck between the hub and the hangar making the rear wheel not properly seated and misaligned. To Jenson's credit, they committed to pay for this to be fixed at the local bike shop

Comments about GT Bicycles GT Bikes Zaskar 9R Pro 2012:

Pros: I was looking for a reasonably priced XC Bike and found this Zaskar. I have been very pleased with the way it rides. The shifts are super smooth thanks to the full XT drivetrain. The Fox front shock is easily locked out for the bigger climbs. The 29er wheels roll over everything.

Cons: Despite their great looks, I'm not a huge fan of the Formula R1 brakes. They don't have enough biting force and they have a different feel left to right. I'm sure a full bleed would fix this though. The saddle is also too stiff for my liking. The tires are also terrible. I honestly spin my way up hills that I never used to have a problem with, so just replace the tires ASAP.

Conclusion: I have never had a 29er HT before this bike. It is so much more efficient than my Stumpjumper that I cover my normal ride in about 3/4 of the usual time. If you are looking for a high end XC bike with a reasonable price tag, look no farther.
