I recently installed these on my 2012 Trek Mamba and I couldn't be happier. They are compact, light and shed mud\muck very well. These pedals are made to be rebuildable which is also nice. I also appreciate the feature of dual-sided entry. It reduces the time searching for the enagagement as with other pedal models. Highly recommended!

These are some of, if not the, best pedals for muddy conditions. They are simply impervious to it. And they're durable and very lightweight.

But they are also fundamentally flawed. The design puts a lot of pressure on the sole of the shoe. The "wings" of the pedal (the eggbeater part) dig into soles and create noticeable grooves. This is NOT GOOD for carbon-soled shoes. Once the grooves get worn in, the creaking starts...

Crank Brothers makes shim kits and a steel sole protector, but adding these take away some float and the ease of release.

I have used eggbeaters for almost a decade, they are easy to engage, even with pedal and shoes covered with mud. Installed these on my new xc/trail bike. eggbeater 1's are really good, these are better, they roll smoother with their needle bearings.

I've been using Egg Beaters for over a decade and do love these 3's, as they seem to be the right balance of lightweight, cost and durability for me. I have not had any problems except for one pair in which the end cap came loose, subjecting the bearings to dirt and they quickly loosened and needed a rebuild. Other than that, they have taken direct hits with many boulders and continue to provide reliable entry and exit and performance. I also love the color options.

Comments about CrankBrothers Crank Brothers Egg Beater 3 Pedals:

I do endurance racing and put reliability above other attributes in my equipment. These pedals will take a beating and keep going. Even in the worst conditions, they'll engage the cleats just fine.

The only thing I'll comment on regarding the durability is that they do need servicing. I like to make sure the outboard bearing shell has grease on the outside (between the shell and the pedal body) so that it can be removed later on. After a muddy race, they'll need cleaning and repacking. They'll work just fine if you don't do these things, but they won't be serviceable afterwards and will wear out in about 2,000 miles instead of the 5,000 before the spring needs replacing by Crank Brothers.

Comments about CrankBrothers Crank Brothers Egg Beater 3 Pedals:

I switched to these years ago and perfer them to the Shimano design. 4 sided entry makes for a quick shoe / pedal interface. However, you can not adjust for float. You must adjust the cleat on the bottom of your shoe to center yourself in the pedal. This is really not a problem and is easy to do.
