Ultegra is what it is, affordable, precision, long lasting componentry. I went to compact when it finally dawned on me the 50 - 11 I could run as a biggest gear was actually slightly bigger than the 53 -12 I was currently running. With a small 34 ring you can get rid of the excessive overlap of a 10 cog while extending your low end and in my case actually gaining another one tooth jump cog. More gear on either end and tighter gearing becomes a no brainer.

Decided to go with this crank for my drive train rather the Dura Ace to save on cost. Couldn't be happier. I think it looks great, is light enough and performs well. What more could I ask for?

I switched from the stock 172.5 mm Gossamer crank on my 2009 Cervelo P2 to a 165mm Ultegra crank and Ultegra Bottom Bracket. I had several issues I was trying to solve. The Gossamer crank shifted poorly while under load, and would often pop the chain off the inner chain ring while shifting down on a big uphill, even after being adjusted by my local bike store. I also had a clicking noise from the drive train under load. Also based on the advice of my fitter, I went to the shorter crank to fix a problem with the top of my knee cap "popping" causing pain in my right knee.
The shorter Ultegra crank solved all these problems. I am amazed at how much better the bike shifts, there is no noise in the drive train, and the shorter crank fixed the pain in the top of my knee. Whether it's the better bearings, crank, or just more comfortable peddling, my average speed also went up more than 1 mph! I'm very impressed with this crank, and it looks like I strapped a piece of art to the side of my bike.
