Great SPD pedal for when you need to clip in and out on the trails. The design for the platform allows for the cleat to rest in properly, and for those rare times that you don't, there is enough of an outer platform to keep your feet in place.

Outer platform helps with long rides, since my MTB shoes aren't as stiff.

I've been an SPD user on my mountain bikes for years (520s), with generally good experience. Always a little difficult for me to "find" in the moment, but always reliable release (especially with the SH56 cleats). Have been using Crank Bros Mallets for a couple years now. Love the platform and ease of "finding". But very disappointed with failures to release. Not many - but more than with the SPD's, & usually with some level of consequence to the ol' bod. Opted to go back to SPD's with the PD530s, for several reasons. First; the more reliable release. Second; so I could still get some platform like with the Mallets. Third; because the 520s were always easy to use & reliable. As usual, the SPD's are difficult for me to "find", but then to add insult to injury, they're very difficult to engage. I need to stomp to engage. And this with adjustment light enough for a few pre-releases (purposefully). I can't see any evidence of mis-manufacturing on either the pedals or cleats (brand new SH56's). I don't know what the story is. Frankly, I'm tired of fussing with it all. So as a result - I think I'm done with clipless. As with my hard-tails - I'm going flats.

If you don't care about shaving a few ounces, then there is absolutely no need to buy other clip pedals for mountain biking. These are the best. If you want lighter, then buy the XT versions.

Good pedal, not as much as a platform feel as I was hoping but that probably comes down to the shoes I use with it. Kind of heavy but I would still highly recommend it at that price point.

Comments about Shimano PD M530 SLX Trail Clipless Pedal:

I have always had the toe cages in the past on my pedals. Just something I was used to I suppose. But when I bought my new X-Caliber 8, it came with horrible cheap-o plastic platforms, which I guess is the norm today because everyone changes pedals anyway. I went looking for a reliable, low-no maintenance clipless pedal that would work when I need them to and have a very low failure rate. My searches led me to these.

I am no hardcore trailblazer, racer or what not. I am a regular guy who used to ride a ton in my teens and early twenties, but now 40 (yikes!!) I decided it was time to ride again. I asked around a lot and had a ton of responses, but so many pointed to this pedal because as everyone said "they are bulletproof" and affordable. If you need to service them, you can. So I found them here at JensonsUSA and jumped on them. I am glad I did. For a first timer, I was told to ride around my neighborhood clicking in and out to get used to them. It really only took one time. Super easy the way they came set out of the box, and I have had ZERO issues. Easy to lock in, easy to pop out and no fears of twisting up an ankle or worse.

Comments about Shimano PD M530 SLX Trail Clipless Pedal:

These pedals are great. I never had clipless pedals for the last 5 years. I bought these for a rebuild on my Norco, I ride mainly XC and always had used a large BMX style platform pedal. Now with these I was easily able to learn how to clip in and out effortlessly. Because the tension is adjustable and they are also dual sided it makes them the perfect affordable pedal. They are heavier than my old pedals, but who cares for the quality and the price. Practise with these for a while then pick up some eggbeaters or the XT's once you know clipless is for you.

Comments about Shimano PD M530 SLX Trail Clipless Pedal:

I've always used Shimano pedals, road and mountain. This is the first replacement pair I've bought in years and they do not disappoint. The larger platform is great although took a couple of rides to get used to. I didn't adjust the tension and it is at a medium setting out of the box. I know they maybe a bit heavy but I'm not too worried about all that as I just enjoy trail riding for the fun of it. You can't beat the quality of these pedals for the price!
