Great SPD pedal for when you need to clip in and out on the trails. The design for the platform allows for the cleat to rest in properly, and for those rare times that you don't, there is enough of an outer platform to keep your feet in place.

Outer platform helps with long rides, since my MTB shoes aren't as stiff.

I've been an SPD user on my mountain bikes for years (520s), with generally good experience. Always a little difficult for me to "find" in the moment, but always reliable release (especially with the SH56 cleats). Have been using Crank Bros Mallets for a couple years now. Love the platform and ease of "finding". But very disappointed with failures to release. Not many - but more than with the SPD's, & usually with some level of consequence to the ol' bod. Opted to go back to SPD's with the PD530s, for several reasons. First; the more reliable release. Second; so I could still get some platform like with the Mallets. Third; because the 520s were always easy to use & reliable. As usual, the SPD's are difficult for me to "find", but then to add insult to injury, they're very difficult to engage. I need to stomp to engage. And this with adjustment light enough for a few pre-releases (purposefully). I can't see any evidence of mis-manufacturing on either the pedals or cleats (brand new SH56's). I don't know what the story is. Frankly, I'm tired of fussing with it all. So as a result - I think I'm done with clipless. As with my hard-tails - I'm going flats.

Comments about Shimano PD M530 SLX Trail Clipless Pedal:

This is a great design and platform pedal for for mountain biking but seriously the bearings in these things suck big time! They recently started making annoying sounds every time I would pedal and I thought it was my crank but low and behold after one season these pedals were shot and the bearings are beginning to lock up. Sad thing is The pedals I replaced them with, the M520 are back on my bike. The older M520's I have are still smooth and have far outlasted these pedals. Seriously is it that hard to use good bearings in these?

Got these to get back into riding clipped in after a few year hiatus. These work great, have a extremely positive feeling click when you get in them, and they are super easy to get in and out of. They let you go in a panic situation, but also keep your feet securely on the pedals when you need them to.

If you don't care about shaving a few ounces, then there is absolutely no need to buy other clip pedals for mountain biking. These are the best. If you want lighter, then buy the XT versions.
