These little lights from Cycleaware mount in place of the endcaps of your handlebars. When you want them, pull them out and turn them on. When you dont, they slide back into your handlebars and out of the way. Two white LEDs face the front and 3 LEDs face the rear, so youre visible from front and behind. These can also be used as portable safety lights.

When I was a kid I used to bike into town to see friends a lot, and it was always enjoyable. I didn't always look forward to the ride back though - about an hour of unlit highway and cars speeding by. Since this light was on sale I thought I'd pick one up for the odd time I'm doing that sort of thing.
The idea of sticking the lights out the end of your bar is sound; it being the widest part of your profile already, extending lights beyond that makes you look appear closer to drivers, making them more likely to give you space. If a car hits the light-bar it may snap off (instead of spinning you around) but probably would depend how tight you're holding on.
There's a plastic "C"-ring around the middle section, which surrounds a sort of ramp - once you insert the bar, turn it counter-clockwise to tighten it in place.

Its design is well thought out, but take note that you need at minimum a 20mm opening in your bar-end for this to fit. CycleAware apparently didn't consider this, because there is nothing about size in their promotional materials, packaging, or website, which is why the rating. My aluminum OE bars only have about a 17.5mm opening, so I was unable to this as designed.
