Shimano PD-M540 Pedals

Inspired by the top of the line M959 racing pedal, the M540 offers a similar sculpted body and minimalist axle design. The open body sheds mud easily and yields easy cleat entry and exit in all types of riding conditions. SPD® binding mechanisms on both sides of the pedal make entry fast and easy without the need for pedal flipping. Adjustable release tension lets you dial in the binding mechanism.

Package includes two pedals and Shimano SPD cleats.

  • Weight: 350 g

I ride technical All Mountain and have been using these for quite a while. Adjustability a major plus. Switched from Crank Bros Candy pedals. I find the cleats on the Shimanos last so much longer than the CB cleats. You actually "save" money by buying these pedals over the CB!

I rode the Ritchie SPDs for a long time, but after 6 years wanted to get something new. These Shimanos were on sale, great price. I was biking in Colorado and Utah, and after the first ride, the grit made the pedals USELESS DEATH TRAPS. Because I couldn't unclip smoothly, I started getting sketched out by technical obstacles, which decreased my riding enjoyment. I pulled these pedals off after the second ride, and they may even end up in the trash.

I've always ridden Shimano clipless pedals and always have been super pleased with the performance. For the price, I don't think you can do much better than these pedals. I love ability to adjust the tension as well as the different cleat options Shimano offers with the multi-release or regular cleats. These pedals are solid. I've banged them on rocks and they still feel like new. Awesome pedals at a nice price!

Been using these pedals for both road and XC for over 6 seasons and still love em. Easy to adjust the clip tension and can take a beating. More than get your money's worth.

Have had other more expensive clipless pedals, finally decided to pick these up for a back up pair since they were on sale, and weren't to much heavier then the XTs. Well they've been on 2 bikes so far, Santa Cruz Blur, and Turner Flux, 4 yrs old and still going strong. When these go out, I will repurchase them again, and not as a back up.

Wow the price of these puppies has gone up! I remember I picked up a pair of these for like 30 something a year ago, but hey, that's inflation. These pedals work well and are affordable given how much of a performance boost you can expect to experience after you put them on. They stay on and are prett lightweight I feel. Good purchase overall. I've put around 300 something miles on them, so I'm still into them pretty fresh, but they're handling great so far.

                      • Pedaling

These are a great place to start for clipless pedals without breaking the bank.

So far I've only used them with the bike on a trainer (it being icy out). They are easy to clip in and out and easy to adjust to the right tension for my beginner's level of comfort. No popping out experienced so far.

Installation was easy. I recommend using a torque wrench (with 8mm hex) if you have access, just to ensure you don't over or under tighten.

Using on a tandem. This seems to be the best priced decent pedal. Ritchey's bearings feel like they are in sand, Chinese made square bearings. Would love to have a decent sealed bearing pedal instead.
