Pros:
This is a solid, entry level derailer. Its sturdy design and bushing-ed pulleys are hardy and have taken everything that I have thrown at them. Salt, snow, slush and rain have all assaulted this derailer, and it still works as well as the day I bought it.
Cons:
It is an entry level derailer, and it shows in the construction. It is not the lightest you can get, and the upper body, especially, is difficult to clean, being enclosed nearly completely.
Other thoughts:
When it comes time to maitain your pulleys, bear in mind that one of the wheels is different from the other. Make note of their orientation before you disassemble the lower frame.
Bottom Line:
I have taken this derailer over technical track, through 4 months of rain, snow, and slush (not to mention salt) and everywhere else I've gone, and it has continued to shine. If properly maintained, this derailer will work just as well as more expensive models...albeit a bit heavier. Highly recommend for a utility bike.

2 words: frustrating and dangerous. it likes to shift at random despite constant tuneups. i've taken it to the bikeshop, gotten the limit screws reset right, had tension perfect, and a mile away from the store it's misshifting again. this thing has sent me over the bars a few times. i can ride 5 miles in one gear and its fine. i can be ascending a hill and it decides to downshift 5 gears or something and i get an unpleasant surprise. next thing i know im making out with the pavement.

Comments about Shimano Alivio M410 Rear Derailleur:
Pros: I have a mountain bike and two wheel sets. One with 1.9 knobbies, 11-32 cassette and other with 1.25 slicks, 11-23 cassette. Works perfectly on both set, very near more expensive derailers. It shifts light and reliable, always delivering what you push on it.
Cons: Once, just once, when I faced heavy rain and thick mud during aproximately one hour, I got a slight malfunction. But was back to normal after clean up.
Comments about Shimano Alivio M410 Rear Derailleur:
There shuold be a better way of knowing what parts you need, ie: a parts list or a size designation.

Comments about Shimano Alivio M410 Rear Derailleur:
i have this RD installed on my winter bike and it has stood up to some real harsh conditions. I have logged over 600+ miles of winter riding. I have only had to do a couple of adjustments over the past few months. With all the salt and ice that is thrown on the roads and thrown in a couple of crashes the deraillier has performed surprising well for [$]!I was really surprised by it perforamce...

Comments about Shimano Alivio M410 Rear Derailleur:
The Shimano Alivo Derailuer is a great derailler for its value and deserves to be recognized. It comes standard on many bikes and is great.
Comments about Shimano Alivio M410 Rear Derailleur:
ok for smooth trails but jumps gears on its own in rough terrain. breaks easy so don't go too far from the truck. pullys went into my spokes and destroyed my ride.
Comments about Shimano Alivio M410 Rear Derailleur:
Junk. Handled the first ride fine but problems ever since. I adjust it before each ride and often have to adjust in the middle of a ride. Shifts poorly and jumps around.
Comments about Shimano Alivio M410 Rear Derailleur:
Great derailleur. replaced my broken stock one and this one is a lot better. Nothing fancy but it provides smooth shifts and NEVER skips like the other people are saying. Those people must not have them properly adjusted.
Comments about Shimano Alivio M410 Rear Derailleur:
this thing sucks. it works alright until i crash or go off a big drop. then it just shifts on its own and i end up leaving the trail mad instead of happy. but what can you expect from a 30 dollar derailleur?
Comments about Shimano Alivio M410 Rear Derailleur:
great shifts. It is speedy, smooth and reliable. ive got vines snagged on it and everything. its a tank. just keeps going. i pretty much abuse this thing and it keeps going. going from 8 to 1 under heavy load and it just goes. awesome derailleur
