I have the 20t and a 17t version on my Surly Karate Monkey. It came with the 17t, and I put the 20t on to make it a bit easier to pedal. I rode the 20t for three years until it finally gave out in the middle of a ride. I bought another 20t, but ended up throwing the 17t on to get a better workout on my rides.

These freewheels aren't the lightest, but they are solid. I figure three years and well over 1,000 miles of strain on it has more than proved its ability. I'll probably buy a couple more in different sizes to keep on hand just to change up my work outs now and then.

The price has shot up almost 2.5 times on these. I bought 3 about 7 years ago and am still using my first one. I dribbled some heavy oil (like Finish Line Winter/Wet or Phil Tenacious) into the the mechanism and it is quiet and smooth now. No dissasembly required.

I have this freewheel installed on my singlespeed bike ridden in the wet and rainy months.

Wobbled within a week !

Pros

    Cons

    • No Paw Sound
    • Poorly Built

Comments about Shimano DX Single Speed Freewheel:

I had to replace an ACS freewheel that had been taking the abuse of street tricks for 5 years like a champ, and only needed to replaced cuz the teeth were shark finning . So I Thought Shimano would be better quality, But this freewheel lasted literally a week- A WEEK ! Before the cog was wobbling within the freewheel body itself.

And if I had any doubts about the quality, I didn't have any after the Shimano freewheel fell apart, when it was being swapped out for a ENO freewheel at the bike shop.

Comments about Shimano DX Single Speed Freewheel:

I got this orriginally for my single speed mountain bike. Didn't like the engagement and felt like there was a bit more resistance. I went back to my Excess Freewheels. Won't be using this as a primary again any time soon. It lives for now on the flip side of my Surly Steamroller as a emergency back up for fixed riding.

Comments about Shimano DX Single Speed Freewheel:

This freewheel is ok for the price. Spend more if noise is a concern. This freewheel is on the front hub of my Pugsley, I don't use it all the time, but when I want to rock a fat tire single speed, its good enough.

Comments about Shimano DX Single Speed Freewheel:

This is the gold standard when it comes to BMX freewheels. Had the competitors very expensive freewheel fail causing a HUGE wipeout! Now that I am healed I am back to the tried and true Shimano product. Never failed yet.

I've used the 17T version for many years, they don't last a long time, but it's a lot of bang for the buck. I can't find a better one for the money, so I'll keep on with Shimano
