Shimano EW-WU101 Wireless Unit

Shimano EW-WU101 Wireless Unit

seamless innovation

Shimano’s Di2 system has undoubtedly altered the path of cycling technology innovation. By introducing electronic technology to an industry previously dominated by analog mechanical devices, Shimano made a distinct footprint. Their EW-WU101 Wireless Unit connects wirelessly via Bluetooth to Shimano’s E-Tube program, allowing riders to set up and manage Di2 shifting behavior. The wireless unit’s controls and data can be accessed via computer, tablet, or smartphone. Key among its assets is the ability to customize shifting preferences on the trailside using nothing more than a smart phone.

Features

  • Uses Shimano D-Fly to easily access Di2 battery level and adjust component settings on the go
  • Additionally allows gear position and battery level to be transmitted wirelessly to compatible devices such as Garmin, Magellan and Pioneer GPS units.
  • Water resistant (do not pressure wash)
  • Compatible with ANT+ devices like Shimano Action Camera and PRO SCIO cycling computer

Will only work with the new DN110 battery. Does not work with BTR-1 or BTR-2.

Super cool add-on and allows my electronic shifting to connect to my Garman 820 which adds a lot of functionality.

Wireless ready!
Upgraded my project one Madone to wireless capability with this bad boy here. Nice little unit. Worked perfectly. Craftsmanship is top notch. Am now able to upgrade and modify all my gearing components as well as shifting parameters on my iPhone E-TUBE app!! This is awesome!

Works but responce is very slow
I'm not sure if it is this sending unit or my Lezyne computer but it takes 10 to 20 seconds for gear shift changes to appear - making this unit not very useful. Battery level functions so that is useful.

updated version.
the predecessor only allowed communication between your drivetrain system and a compatible bike computer.

This one (new version) also allows blue tooth connectivity to your iPhone via the e-tube project app.

Once installed correctly the sensor works well
Purchased the Shimano wireless unit so I could enhance Garmin Edge 520 features. Getting the sensor to "talk" to the Garman unit was an adventure. The firmware was a hassle to install and I had to take bicycle back to the dealer to complete the installation. Ended up needing to purchasing a new battery with additional memory to get the complete system up and running. Installation of the sensor was very easy and convenient. Over all I think the wireless sensor will be a worthwhile investment.

what's the difference between this and the EW-WU111?
rsemsem on Jul 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Initially there were a couple of differences but Shimano has updated the WU111 so the units have the same functionality. The WU101 is likely best mounted near the rear derailleur while the WU111 is small and has more installation options, including internally. The Shimano 9150 installation manual doesn't mention the WU101 for some reason, only the WU111 and installation is usually in the front of the bike. near the shifter junction. Both have ANT+ and Bluetooth. Lots of misinformation out there.
