The LX 585-series offer a dual-control design (one lever operates brakes and shifters) in a hydraulic specific design that is perfect for use with the LX (or any Shimano) hydraulic disc brake system. The shifters accomodate 3 x 9 drivetrains and feature an optical gear display for instant gear recognition.

These worked great for 3 years of extensive use, in climate that dishes everything (and takes you by surprise). Few specs of rust on smalls screws and dirt but otherwise in mint condition. Bleeding breaks can be pain but I did it only once when put them together. Got my first set at LBS (lx calipers probably at jenson - no longer available). Got the 2nd set when moved from 26" to 29" - hydraulic hoses alone would cost more than shifters (?) - I'll keep them for spare.
Love the dual control concept. My favorite is the extremely fast and precise downshift when pared with a rapid-rise derailleur. On steep climbs, I can briefly power-off and shift without stressing the chain. Single unit gives more room on the handlebars to mount suspension lockout levers, etc. Just bought another today for my next build.
For they price that these are at now, even if you don't like them you only spent about $30.00 and maybe an hour or two of your time for install. They perform great and if not better than 'my' expectations. They are worth it.

These levers are great. I initially was concerned about the transition to dual control, but after the first shift, I was used to them. It is so nice to have access to all bike controls without having to change hand position, especially in rough technical sections. Best shifters I've ever used.
