I put these on my hardtail so I can just ride around the neighborhood with my kids, but I can still clip in for trail riding without changing anything. Has worked fine for me. I find the clipping the same as my 785 trail pedals. Sure they're heavy, but why would you put these on a race bike?

I bought these pedals for my commuter, and I'm happy to have the option to ride clipless or with street shoes. That said, I wouldn't necessarily call these pedals the best of both worlds, as the platform side is barely grippy enough. Some commenters mentioned struggling to find the right side of the pedal, however I felt like this was not a problem, as my feet could feel whether I was on the right side. If you lift the foot off the upside-down pedal, the rotation of the cranks will flip the pedal for you, and when you put your foot back down, it will be right-side-up! Granted, it is another thing to think about, but you don't need to take your eyes off the road. I wouldn't tell anyone to stay away from these, but I have my eye on pedals with more grip on the platform side if I were to get this kind again.

    Comments about Shimano PD-A530 Pedals:

I bought these to put on my LHT I have another set on my road bike and I love the versatility of being able to wear clipless or normal shoes. Sometimes I just want to cruise up to the market or to the local watering hole and just want to be casual and they allow me to do this and then be able to clip in for my weekly rides without having to change pedals or ride a different bike. I'm a fan.

I like these pedals because they're versitile. I can use the clips for more adventurous riding and the platforms when riding more leisurely with my kids.

      Comments about Shimano PD-A530 Pedals:

I've only used Shimano pedals so can't compare to others. Have always been satisfied with their product and this one is no different. Threw these on my single speed commuter and absolutely love it. Riding clipless is the way to go on a singlespeed. Have yet to use the platform side, but good to know it's there if I need to go around the corner and don't want to wear my bike shoes.

        Comments about Shimano PD-A530 Pedals:

I would love to ride my Trek Madone with its Shimano 105 SPD-SL pedals full-time. Alas, my age has caught up with me...I am no longer agile enough to unclip fast enough on busy local streets. After one-too-many painful and embarrassing falls it was clearly time for a change. With the A530s I can still clip-in on long, unobstructed rides and use the platform side on stop-and-go city streets. I'm using the A530s on my Trek 7500 Hybrid as well.

          Comments about Shimano PD-A530 Pedals:

This was my first SPD and I wanted the ability to use it with regular shoes. The clip worked great with Shimano SH-RT32 shoes. The platform while large enough lacks a good grip, so it is ok with sneakers but not so good with dress shoes or sandals. Overall, I think it is a great SPD for commuter or fitness rider. Unfortunately, my TREK 7.2 where I had them got stolen last week (welcome to NYC). I am not sure what type of bike I am getting next, but the pedals are likely to be these again.

          Comments about Shimano PD-A530 Pedals:

There are better and cheaper options such as the Wellgo WPD-M-17C, which have substantially better platform grip. The clips on these are good, like most other Shimano clipless, but foot slides easily off the platform side as it's just a couple of smooth edges for grip.. forget it when wet. A design upgrade with the option for pins would make this a pretty good dual pedal. As they are, they're best for casual riders that want might want to try clipless but still have a platform, albeit not a good platform.

          Comments about Shimano PD-A530 Pedals:

The platforms are a better choice when my wife and I take shorter rides on the local paved trails (lots of street crossings), and the clipless side is great for those longer weekend rides on crushed stone/gravel "country" trails. I'm not racing, so the weight of these pedals is no big deal. Wish the platforms had a little more "grip", but otherwise a smart choice for anyone who does double duty on the same bike.

For commuting and group rides, and an introduction to riding while clipped in.

Both sides work well, these pedals are sturdy, and they look good for a while.

The paint was worn off of the flat side.

            Comments about Shimano PD-A530 Pedals:

I got these primarily for commuting but also the trail. Easy to start pedaling with after a stop light since you don't immediately have to be concerned with clipping in (depending on what shoe you couple them with). And they're plenty rugged for the trail. I think the platform side would be comfortable in most shoes except for something like Converse or dress shoes. Running shoes would be fine. So far i'm very happy and they make a great compromise and fill a niche.
