Love this cassette!

Comments about Shimano Ultegra CS-6800 11-SPD Cassette:

Absolutely LOVE this cassette. Just don't need a 11-28. I almost never used the 11 except on downhills. This cassette has closer ratios and shifting becomes much easier throughout cassette.

Great option if you need more low end gear range. The slightly larger gear to gear gaps over an 11-28 really aren't noticeable. The 6800 version does seem to shift slightly better than the 5800 version(Different ramps? Different coating/finish?) Marginal weight savings over 5800.

Comments about Shimano Ultegra CS-6800 11-SPD Cassette:

I've had several each of the 5800 series 105 cassettes and 6800 series Ultegra cassettes, and I can honestly say the Ultegra shifts better. Not sure if there's a coating/finisb difference or different ramp profiles, but it's certainly worth the $20 or so higher price versus 105 series. Weight savings are very small over 105.

The 11-32 is a great upgrade if you do a lot of climbing. That extra shift over the 11-28 makes for about a 10RPM increase in cadence when chugging up a climb. It has definitely made a difference in comfort for me. The very slightly bigger jumps in other parts of the cassette aren't noticable versus the 11-28.

Went from an 11-25, to an 11-28, and made a nice difference. But for one ride in particular, (

Went from an 11-25, to an 11-28, and it helped on most of my hill courses. I have a 52-36 chain ring up front. There is one hill, however, (Double Peak, San Marcos Ca.), that has a section that still was punishing one of my 68 year old knees. So I swallowed my pride and bought an 11-32 cassette. Not only does it help my knee on the steep parts, but I am really enjoying the wider spread of gearing with the middle gears in the flats and moderate hills.

Hi I have a 2015 11 speed Trek road bike with a stock 11-28 cassette and the stock Short Cage Ultegra Derailleur.

I wanna use an 11-32 cassette. Do I need to change my cassette to the GS or use an extender?

Use the GS derailleur. The short cage just doesn't have enough swing to take up the chain without becoming overstressed.

Ultegra should take the 11-32 fine and is officially supported. You may need an extended derailleur but likely not. It is Dura-Ace 9000 that does not officially support 11-32. Thanks

Can I install the 11x32 cassette in the place of the 12x28 one without changes to the derailleur or chain length?

I have actually moved to the 11-32 cassette from 11-28. Believe me when I tell you that you will absolutely DO want the long-cage derailleur. Do not try to make this work with the regular derailleur.

I should also tell you that you can make a compatible 11-speed, 11-30 cassette (SRAM makes one) work without changing your rear derailleur. But then, of course you'd have to buy that cassette (also an added expense). Much more expensive than buying the long cage derailleur.

But once you go to 32-teeth, you want the longer cage.

I do know of a couple of people who were able to make 32-teeth fit with the regular 6800 derailleur. Neither of them stayed with it. One of them had his chain snap and derailleur rip-off when shifting. So please do not even try it.

It Depends, most commonly people will use a medium cage derailleur with the 11x32 the easiest way you can tell if you have a medium cage derailleur is the space between the jockey wheels, if they're almost touching you have a short cage. If you have excess chain right now then you should be okay, however if your chain is already optimized for your setup it would be best to replace the chain as well.

Yes and No! Having built 9-speed, 10-speed, and 11-speed drive trains, I can tell you the correct way would be to use a medium cage derailleur (the GS suffix) with a slightly longer chain. You are talking about re-engineering a complex mechanical system that was designed by real engineers. Once you start to redesign things, you take responsibility for the costs and any failures.
That said, a 4 tooth difference might physically bolt together and work but would tend to put a strain on the derailleur. I once added 4 teeth total to a 9-speed system with a short derailleur and it worked ok with the same chain and derailleur. Specs for total derailleur take up are published on Shimano website, just google the part numbers and a pdf should come up. Shimano expresses this as a number for a total tooth count capacity. Jenson's may also be able to give you this info.
Another thought... Is your existing 12X28 cassette an 11-speed or 10-speed. If it's 11-speed Shimano/Sram then the CS-6800 should fit the freehub. You just need to match 11-speed cassette with an 11-speed Shimano/Sram compatible freehub. 11-speed and 10-speed drivetrains have different cog spacing and each require different rear shifters and derailleurs. They use different measurements for cable pull and derailleur movement and cannot be mixed. To complicate matters, some newer freehubs might come with 10-speed cassettes that use an extra spacer that can be removed to fit a wider 11-speed cassette. However older 10-speed freehubs may not be compatible because they don't' have enough depth on the splines to fit all the cogs and tighten the lock screw.

You will need a Rear Derailleur that has a long cage. For example:
                  RD-6800-GS.
You may need to make the chain a bit longer if you are changing from a
short cage (SS) to a long cage (GS).

                  A:

To run the 32-tooth cassette you need the 6800 long-cage (GS) derailleur.
The chances are that you have the regular, short-cage 6800 derailleur (SS)
Do you actually have a Shimano 6800 derailleur? If you do and (as is
likely) have a regular one, then no, you cannot just install the cassette.
You will need to get the long-cage derailleur. Even though Shimano only
specs the regular SS derailleur to use cassettes up to 28 teeth maximum, I
have successfully run it with a 30-tooth derailleur from SRAM. But 32
teeth will not work with it. Don't bother. I've tried. For that, you need
                  the long-cage
The odds are also that you would need a new chain. It depends on how long
you current one is. But again, the odds are that you will want a new,
                  longer chain.

You will need a longer chain, and a "long cage" rear derailleur to handle that longer chain.  According to Zinn and articles on bike forums, 10 speed rear derailleurs work with 11 speed shifters of the same brands.  I have had great success using a Centaur 10 speed rear der. with 11 speed Athena shifters.Good luck!-Charles P

I've heard of people going to a 11x32 without changing the derailleur, but
you will need a longer chain. According to Shimano, nothing over a 28
without moving to an Ultegra GS derailleur.

No, you need a long cage derailleur and a few more links of chain.  Maybe look at a smaller front chainring if you need to gear down that far to avoid the hassle?
