Shimano XT CN-HG95 10 Speed MTB Chain

Shimano HG95 10 Speed MTB Chain

The HG95 is Shimano's new XT-level chain specifically designed to work with the Dyna-Sys 10 speed MTB drivetrains and features Shimano’s new ultra-low friction surface treatment, “SIL-TEC”. Thanks to this new surface treatment, XT chains will now operate smoother with less friction resulting in less noise, requiring less maintenance with better mud shedding performance, and lasting longer than before with better wear and abrasion resistance. The new “SIL-TEC” coating paired with Shimano’s Dyna-Sys 10 speed system means closer ratios, smoother shifts, and a more stable pedal stroke. This chain is directional for maximum shifting performance, for use with Dyna-Sys cassettes only.

  • More efficient, quieter, less maintenance
  • Dyna-Sys 10-speed Chain
  • Treated with new ultra-low friction surface treatment “SIL-TEC”
  • Directional chain for faster, smoother shifts under power, further evolution of shifting performance
  • Standard Connecting Pin (HG95 / HG75)
  • Weight: 273g (114 links)
  • For use with 10 speed Shimano Dyna-Sys MTB drivetrains only, not optimized for Road use

This chain is well integrated into the level of performance you would expect from the XT groupset. However, as many others have said, it seems that performance is obtained at a cost, being reliability. I weight 145 lb and I do shift under load, I´m also a pedal with a lot of power. I have never had a broken a chain before until now, I normally keep my chains well lubricated and maintained, but when I first got this chain, during the first trip I broke it power pedaling. At first I thought it must have been the standard pin which wasn´t installed properly, but it happened again at a later trip. Even though I quite like it, it defeats all purposes if it brakes ramdomly. Works good, but always carry a chain remover tool, for racing I would stay away from this chain.

Shimano makes a great product. My issue is with the master link pin Shimano uses. It is difficult to determine if is seated correctly. I have had 2 chains out of several, that have separated at this link. My current solution is the use a SRAM master link to eliminate any doubts of integrity. Problem I have is that this adds an extra $5-6 cost to the chain.

the description states "specifically designed to work with the Dyna-Sys 10 speed MTB drivetrain" so i am wondering if it will work my SRAM cassette and SRAM cranks?

It probably won't shift as smoothly on a sram drive train.

I would imagine it would work fine. Chain sizes and thickness are determined by the numbers of gears you have. So if you have a sram, or shimano cassette, does that mean you cannot use a KMC chain? The answer is yes, you can use whatever brand Shane you want as long as it is set for that speed cassette that you have. If you have a nine speed cassette, make sure you get a nine speed chain. If you have a 10 speed cassette make sure you get a 10 speed chain. I hope this helps you

Yea it will work with SRAM fine. It just says that because it is a higher level chain designed to work with the dyna-Sys drivetrain system meaning if your running shimano and use all dyna-sys it will be the most optimal performance but it won't affect performance on a SRAM drivetrain.

I think I have that chain on a Race Face crank and Shimano cassette.  If that is what I actually did, it is working normally.  (I have 3 nearly identical bikes and the components are about 90% identical so I can't be completely sure that is the configuration where I used the chain.)

If it's a 10 speed cassette yup it'll work, if it's an 11 speed cassette
you'll need an 11 speed chain due to the width of the links. I'd recommend
getting a SRAM chain though as they use a reusable link where the shimano
chains use a pin. The benefit of the SRAM chain system is that you can
remove the chain and put it back on without anything additional while the
shimano chains require a new pin every time. I run a 1070 SRAM chain using
a XT shifter and derailleur with a SRAM cassette and chainring.

      A:

As long as the gear count matches the chains are interchangeable. But I
would just get a sram chain if that is what you have. SRAM chains are
      easier to install.

  • Q:

    I'm replacing a Shimano HG74 10spd chain on my Diamondback Sortie 3 with a Shimano M771 XT 10spd Cassette (11-36t) and Shimano FCM780 XT, Dyna-Sys 10spd Crankset.

    Will this chain work?
    Thanks,

Yep, 10 speed is 10 speed. I run the same cassette and cranks but I went to a 1x10 setup with a raceface narrow wide chain ring.

That will work. I have the same cassette and cranks. As long as the chain
is for a 10 speed it should work.

    • A:

Yes. That is the correct chain. However it is a directional chain, so make sure you install it correctly. Also remember that you may need to remove links from the stock chain. Always refers to Shimano's website for most up to date installation instructions.
