Shimano XT RD-M8000 11SP Rear Derailleur

Shimano XT RD-M8000 Rear Derailleur

The long-awaited Shimano XT 11 speed drivetrain has made its grand entrance! Featuring Shimano’s innovative Shadow Plus technology and a refined geometry, the Deore XT M8000 11-speed rear derailleur is designed to reign authority over today’s aggressive style of trail and all-mountain riding. By maintaining chain tension, the optimized slant angled Shadow system eliminates chain slap and greatly lowers the chances of dropping your chain. The easy-to-adjust chain stabilizer makes it quick and effortless to dial in the perfect amount of stability for varying conditions and terrain.

The XT M8000 rear derailleur employs a new hyper low-friction coating technology and an improved pulley design that greatly lightens up the shift operation, allowing up to 20% less effort. Finally, support for larger rear clusters is offered as well, with clearance on up to 11-46T rear cassettes for massive range.

Don't know which cage length to choose? Choose a long cage "SGS" derailleur if you have 3 chainrings on your crankset, and a medium cage "GS" if you have 1 or 2 front chainrings.

Precise shifting, great chain management
I replaced my SRAM X1 rear derailleur with this one on my 1x11 drivetrain and the shifting is so much better! No compatibility issues with the SRAM 10-42 cassette and the shifting is more precise. The clutch system on the XT derailleur is also much stiffer than the SRAM X1 derailleur, so the chain is even more securely managed. Easy swap and great upgrade.

Excellent Value!!
I bought this derailleur to replace my aging 3x9 sram system. All I can say is WOW! Along with the XT shifter, 11-46 XT cassette and an oval 32 tooth ring up front, this system is nearly silent. No more dropped chains. No more chain slapping about my chain stay. Shifting is precise. If you are still on the fence about going to a 1x setup, this shimano setup will blow you away with its price to performance ratio! Setup is very easy. I was amazed at how simple and snag free the installation went.

Doing a nice job with my 11/42
Working well with my very large gear range 50/34 front and 11/42 rear hybrid setup. Long Cage SGS version. 47T total capacity. Slightly clunky in the big chain ring upfront and the top 3 rear sprockets but it works. I'm sure it would be fine with a 1x setup or any lesser gear range.

Easy to set up
Love this component line. XT rocks and is super wallet friendly. I had this rear derailleur on and indexed to my new XT 11speed cassette in less than 5minutes. I had to make a couple tension adjustments on the shifter after the first ride but it has been running flawlessly and has yet to drop my chain. Could not be happier.

A way to settle into 11 speed without breaking the bank
Shimano did a fantastic job trickling down the tech from the 11 speed XTR into the XT transmission line. After installing the GS Rear Derailleur along with all of the other 11 Speed XT parts, it feels different and I like it! jumping up 4 cogs is almost as awesome as being able to drop down 2 and the rear derailleur handles these jumps with ease.

11 speed XT Rear Derailleur
Tucks in nicely, out of the way. Setup is fast and easy too. GS (MED) cage works fine for the 11-46 cassette.

You won't know this isn't XTR until you look down. No difference in function, just looks & weight.

Shimano's stuff is much more cost effective, no issues with range either.

Clutch works as intended
Dropped a chain with a SRAM NX rear derailleur. That was not acceptable! This unit was lighter, too, at 274 grams. Be sure to get the install directions from the Shimano website - it needs to be set up properly to get up on a 46T cassette.

Smooth as butter with the 11-46 cassette. I would definitely recommend this over the competition. Do it, save some coin and have enough for some beers and a burger after the ride.

BEST ANSWER: According to the tech docs the 11-speeds have a different part number than the 10-speed versions. I would look to order the right one. The XT M8000 P/N appears to be Y5RT98010.
Will this rear derailleur work with a 10spd cassette? specifically the sunrace MX3 11-42 10-speed for a 1x10?
A shopper on Jun 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This derailleur is designed for use with 11 speed cassettes.
How do I know if I need GS or SGS cage if upgrading a Trance from 2x10 to 1x11?
scott f on Jan 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: From the description of the derailleur on Jenson:

Choose a long cage "SGS" derailleur if you have 3 chainrings on your crankset, and a medium cage "GS" if you have 2 or fewer front chainrings.

I also converted from a 2x10 to an 1x11 and bought the medium cage GS. Works great.
I am running a 30t single narrow/wide chainring up front will the gs cage work an 11-42 cassette?
Shawn bear on Jun 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes it will work. I have that setup on one of my bike and works great! Have Fun!
My goal is to go 1x11 with a 32 front oval ring and the 11-50 Sunrace cassette. Will the medium cage still reach that or should I go long cage to be safe?
Chase C on May 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The cage length isn't really the limiting factor, it's the actual P-knuckle design of the XT derailleur. When you play with gearing that lies outside the spec limits of the derailleur you risk catastrophic damage to the derailleur and possibly your frame. You may wish to upgrade your derailleur to vastly improve the shifting with the WolfCage. It is sized for 49T conversions but a 50T is not much bigger and should shift fine.

I am replacing a Shimano XT 10spd Rear derailleur and 11-36 cassette on a 1x10, to a Shimano XT 11spd with 11-42 cassette. From reading it looks like the medium cage will work but will i need any other extensions to make this compatible? Its going on a 2013 Scott Spark 910 if that makes any difference. thanks
A shopper on May 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: On a Bronson 2015 (not the current model), I went from an 11-36 10SP XT, 2x10. Upgraded to 1x11 XT with 11-40. Can't speak to the Spark specifically but believe the driver / hub will accommodate 11sp. They basically moved everything closer together and thinned out the chain. Don't forget the 11sp shifter and you might want to think about a bigger narrow/wide chain ring if you want more top end speed OR keep the current one for better climbing. Medium cage should work up to 11-46. Hope this helps.
I have a 30 in the front 11-46 in the back...wich derailleur should I use, sgs or gs?
A shopper on Jul 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: GS cage (medium) should be the right one. With a single chainring you don't have to account for any front diameter change. If you had a triple chainring setup, an SGS would be needed.
hi this is model 2017 or 2016? thanks

BEST ANSWER: There should be no difference between 2016 and 2017 version as long as the Model name's the same.
Im building an off road touring bike. Can I run a 24/34 (boost) front with an 11/46 rear? If possible do I use a short or long cage?
A shopper on May 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The medium cage works well for a 1x11 and for some 2x11 systems that use smaller front and rear gearing sizes. In your case, I think you would need to use the long cage version, as when the bike is in the smallest gear front and rear, you will have a pretty long length of chain to gather up and keep tight. You will likely need a longer chain than the standard 116 links also, but that could be influenced by frame size. Use the chain length measuring guide that ships with the derailleur to be sure.
Hello, what does the designation "Front Difference: MAX 10T" mean? Is that relevant only to 2x systems? If I want to have a 1x system with a 28T front chainring and the 42T cassette on the back, is that possible?

Thank you!
The Experiment on May 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, that refers to the front chainrings and has no bearing on 1x systems.
