Shimano WH-M985 XTR Race Wheelset

Shimano XTR Race Wheelset
Balance and Innovation have long been staples of Shimanos wheel program, and now that trail riders have a dedicated wheelset of their own, the new XTR Race wheels have been rebalanced and refocused specifically to meet the exacting demands of top-level cross-country racers.

Leaner and meaner than ever, these disc-brake-only wheels come with true UST-compatibility in a 19-millimeter-wide, dent-resistant scandium hoop. At just 350 grams per rim, acceleration comes instantly. And for as light as these wheels feel underfoot, thanks to a straight-pull lacing design that uses 24 butted 15-gauge spokes per wheel, they dont flinch under hard, aggressive cornering. And forget about all those “one-race” wheels with their dubious claims of gossamer weight and performance, because this hand-built, sub-1,500-gram wheelset draws on decades of podium-winning experience and is as focused and committed to performing on race day—or on any day—as you are.
  • Super light weight scandium tubeless rim
  • 8/9/10 speed compatible freehub
  • Titanium freehub body with quick engagement
  • Tubeless and tubed tire compatible
  • Stiff oversized aluminum
  • Disc brake only
  • Centerlock rotor mounting system
  • Double contact high quality seals
  • Approximate weight 1476 grams
  • QR hubs include QR skewers

Lightweight and Durable - Def Worth It!
Under 1500 grams, and sold as a XC wheel set - On a 5 3/4" Travel bike these wheels have seen Mammoth Mountain, Big Bear Mountain, and 1K+ miles of XC without any issue. True as the day they were removed from the box, durable paint, never a spoke issue...Can't beat the quality! I took my bike in for a tuneup, and told the LBS to replace all the spokes if necessary, and same on bearings. Even though they've been ridden beyond designated use, and hose washed 2x weekly, nothing needed replacement. Nice job Shimano!

Downhill strong, Race light, and good lo
XTR wheels are a step up from my old XT set. Tubeless is So easy, as the rims are sealed, no tape needed. Most tires mount with floor pump. I have ridden 100 hours on these and no truing needed ( 5 Downieville runs too!). Good warranty, light weight, and good looking. I use these as XC wheel set mixed with some downhilling, and they are tough enough!

Not only do they look great but they are light and true tubeless. No more carying tubes or messy liquids!!! Just carry a small patch kit for a just in case... Paired them with tubeless continental mountain king up front and race king on back for a great worry free ride!!!

Light, fast, and strong
Great all around wheelset, and perfect for race day or even as every day wheels. I mounted up 26x2.4" Specialized Purgatory tires, since that's what I had, but I was skeptical about how they'd feel on the narrow 19mm width. But they were actually just fine, with just a bit of squirm at lower pressures. Ideally I think 2.3" is the max I would go with these. My race day tires are 2.2F/2.1R which worked out perfectly for a super light combination.

The rear wheel needed to be trued after the first couple rides, but it wasn't far out. I haven't had them trued for months now, and riding 3+ times a week. I had to adjust the bearing pre-load twice, but that's an easy job with a cone wrench and a hex key. I can't really find anything wrong with these except perhaps they're a little spendy, but then again you get what you pay for.
