Featuring Shimano’s innovative Shadow clutch technology, the Deore XT rear derailleur is designed for today’s aggressive style of trail and all-mountain riding. By maintaining chain tension, the Shadow system eliminates chain slap and lowers the chances of dropping your chain. Other improvements include reduced noise and rotational drag as well as a low-profile pulley cage for better clearance over harsh terrain. Why choose an XT derailleur over a cheaper derailleur? Built for heavy duty and long life in demanding trail conditions, the XT's overall linkage is stiffer and has a more machined construction, increasing durability and stiffness, which also increases shift quality. The pulleys are also of a higher quality, and spin easier for less drivetrain drag. The whole derailleur is built to exacting standards and will last significantly longer than a cheaper derailleur as well.

Don't know which cage length to choose? Choose a long cage "SGS" derailleur if you have 3 chainrings on your crankset, and a medium cage "GS" if you have 2 or fewer front chainrings.

  • Compatible with 10 speed drivetrains
  • Uses Shadow derailleur clutch
  • Low profile pulley cage
  • Weight: 258g

When I switched to the clutch on my Trek Remedy I did not have high expectations. I was running a tripple up front and was constantly dropping a chain. I fully expected I would need a guide soon and though the clutch might quiet things down a bit. I totally underestimated the product as it not only silenced all chain slap but also prevented chain drop. I have no need to use a guide now and I will never run a MTB of any kind without a clutch derailleur. Further, I won't run a cross race without one either. This is a fantastic design that held up for me over several hundred miles.

I have long been a fan of shimano XT components but they really dropped the ball with the Shadow plus. I have broken three clutches each within 30 hours of ride time. The adjustment band with tiny nut snaps in half turning the shadow plus into a standard non clutch derailleur. I size my chain by bottoming my suspension first so my chain is not too short. I ride a Mojo HD in rocky terrain. I'm curious as to why these derailleurs are failing me. Could it by my bike's DW Link suspension design?

Comments about Shimano XT M786 Rear Derailleur:

Good clutch derailleur, shifts perfectly with an XT shifter and does not skip a beat. It was a touch harder to set the proper shifting tension than a Sram the first time, but no more than another couple of minutes of tinkering to get it spot on, in the shop and trail-side.

Another caveat, is that the medium length derailleur works with the One-Up Rad cage.

Comments about Shimano XT M786 Rear Derailleur:

After a stick ate my last non-clutch derailleur, I bought this one. I'm pretty used to shifting in big-big on the downhills to avoid chain slap. With the clutch, I don't have to do that anymore. Nice and quiet.

Comments about Shimano XT M786 Rear Derailleur:

I've never had any issues with Shimano's XT derailleurs - they just take a licking and keep on shifting. I recently switched to a OneUp 1x10 setup (42t big cog) so bought the medium cage derailleur and replaced the outer cage plate with OneUp's RAD cage plate - that made shifting work extremely well even with the wider range gearing (11-42).

Comments about Shimano XT M786 Rear Derailleur:

Has worked fantastic with a 1x10 setup without a chain guide. I paired this derailleur with a XT 11-36 cassette and a race face narrow wide 30T single ring. It has worked great, no chain drop and very quiet riding.

Comments about Shimano XT M786 Rear Derailleur:

Love the new clutch technology and very smooth shifting but only gave 4 stars because I prefer the stiffer sram shifting plus the x9 is a tad cheaper for comparable performance, but that is personal preference. The whole shimano line from SLX is all good stuff!!!

Comments about Shimano XT M786 Rear Derailleur:

Worked great for a while and really reduced the chain slap, but it quit working. I though I just needed to tighten the band, but when I took the cover off the metal band that holds the adjustment screw broke. Researched it and it seems to be a very common problem. It's still under warranty so I will try another one and hope for better results.

The good thing is that it still works after breaking, just doesn't reduce chain slap.

Flying down a Rocky Mountain at a high rate of speed does not qualify as a "quiet" event, but this derailleur eliminates a lot of the noise the chain makes while slapping around. It also prevents the chain from mysteriously jumping off the front chain-ring. It's Great for those who push their bikes to the limit on the downhill. Did it seriously take 30 years of mountain biking to come up with this idea?
