The SH-56 is an easier entry and release over the standard SH-51 cleats that come with Shimano pedals. It permits you to lift and rotate your heel to get out, a more natural motion. It is also safer for forward and backward releases in emergencies. The SH-51 is really a racers cleat and the SH-56 cleat should be the one Shimano makes standard IMO for normal recreational riders. The generic, less expensive Wellgo 98A cleat works almost as well and requires less tension for the same release force. If you want the absolute minimum release tension, use the SH-56 cleat.

Comments about Shimano SM-SH56 Multi Release SPD Cleat:
I have used multi release cleats for many years. Getting out of the pedals in a pinch is much easier than with single release. Occasional accidental releases happen, but careful adjustment of the release tension minimizes this. Last time I used single relase on my pedals I fell trying to get out... the appropriate tension is very different.

i bought these with some inexpensive -Serfas Interval- cycling shoes for spinning. They both work as they were designed to; not unhappy with my purchase.

Comments about Shimano SM-SH56 Multi Release SPD Cleat:
I broke my left ankle 15 years ago and clipping out with me left has always been a chore, especially when I'm going down. I don't rotate my left heel outward very easily, and it tends to supinate as well. Now, I can exit easily on that side.
The only drawback is that, if the pedal is adjusted too loosely, I can pull out when out of the saddle.
The Shimano MTB pedals aren't as easy to clip into as the egg beaters, but I just couldn't get out of the left pedal with the egg beater (or the Shimano black cleat.)
Comments about Shimano SM-SH56 Multi Release SPD Cleat:
This is one of the best cleat out there for mtb shoes. very easy to clip on and can unclick by either side (left or right twist of the leg). I have been using mine for over two years now and is still running. I recently bought a second one for my son to use with his road bike.
Comments about Shimano SM-SH56 Multi Release SPD Cleat:
First time using clipless pedals. Used these cleats (SH-51's came with pedals). The SH-56's released at multiple positions. Great Cleats.

Should come standard with shimano pedals instead of the sh-51. Love the feel of security knowing you can release from different angles.

Comments about Shimano SM-SH56 Multi Release SPD Cleat:
Great cleats. I've been hitting all kinds of stuff with these and they never come out of the pedal when I don't want them to. Also they are easy to get in and out of and easy installation.
