These are better than the stock caged pedals that came on one of my bikes. They are good (decent), but not great, as you get what you pay for (and get less as spending increases of course).

The bearings are a lot smoother than the ones on the stock caged pedals, but not as good as the ones on my new Ultegras.

The clip retention springs are looser than I prefer for sprints or any high output, but they are more than adequate for commuting and beginners.

Within a month there were a ton of scratches in the paint, and I was even fairly careful with them.

This is my first set of "clipless" pedels and I found it very easy to clip in and clip out when I started using them. I am currently using them with a pair of Shimano SH-R078.

        Comments about Shimano PD-R540 Pedals:

I'm a mountain biker who rides flats. When I added a road bike to my arsenal, I needed to go clipless. These pedals were super affordable and work great. I can get in and out of them with ease, which was my main concern as I learn how to use clipless.

          Comments about Shimano PD-R540 Pedals:

i'm currently training for the ms150 and got these pedals to try out based off a recommendation. really glad i listened because they are comfortable with a nice wide platform. i dont find my feet going numb after a couple dozen miles like i did before with the narrower spd pedals i was using previously. they are simple to clip into and out of but hold firm as i pedal so i dont have to worry about my foot coming loose as i pull up. (i didnt have that issue with the other pedals, they were just so narrow, my toes would go numb.) the spd-sl (look style) pedlas are wider and longer than spd pedals, so it can make going around sharp curves a little bit to get used to because i feel like my foot might hit, but it doesnt, and like i said before, i like the larger platform because my foot sits more comfortably longer. all in all, if you are a novice or experienced, and looking for a nice wide, light pedal, these are a great choice.

            Comments about Shimano PD-R540 Pedals:

I bought these as a quick fix for my gravel bike so I could use my road shoes instead of buying new shoes and pedals, they work great. I ride off road frequently and with the low cost of these I don't worry at all about them getting beat up or scratched or busted, because I can always buy another pair. I highly recommend them for someone looking to try out clipless for the first time but don't want to commit to a nice pair of pedals.

First time riding clipless the cleats that come with these pedals have a lot of play (coming from platforms w/straps) which feels clunky to me just got some 4/5degs from the LBS which feel better. No issues with pedals so far...loved the price!
