I've bought 3 of these UN55 units, and on two of them the aluminum cap appears to be loose on the cartridge, by about .020". I made a plastic spacer to take up the play. On the third unit, the cap seems to fit neatly. Possibly these were packed with the wrong cap?

Comments about Shimano UN55 Bottom Bracket:

Your basic square-taper BB, well constructed and at a fair price. It's nice to see that Shimano is still making decent BBs to support those of us who run square-taper bottom brackets. I replaced an older UN72 BB (XT-level), and this UN55 felt similar in weight (measured by hand, not weighed). In any event, it wasn't appreciably heavier. I was also surprised that the non-fixed cup was metal, and not plastic as in previous iterations of the UN5* models.

Don't waste your time or money or no-name BBs, Get the Shimano!

I use this on my MTB last one lasted me 15 years & still worked but had a little play The UN55 has a metal cap but my other MTB had the cheaper one with the plastic cap that can break and then become one heck of a time to get the BB out I had to use a torch to melt the cap while unscrewing the other side of the BB with JENSON'S Bottom bracket removal tool which I recommend for good value it fits & works perfectly

Comments about Shimano UN55 Bottom Bracket:

My old BB was making all sorts of funny noises, and when I finally took it out to replace it it looked like a mess. Plus the plastic cup cracked the moment I pulled it out, which made me happy I ordered a BB with a metal one.

So I got the 68x122.5 which is the one that matches my frame and crankset, and it works like a charm. It was pretty easy to install too, though it took some persuasion to tighten all the way in. Seems pretty solid and gets the job done, the previous BB was probably in there for 20 years or something and I expect the new one to last just as much.

Comments about Shimano UN55 Bottom Bracket:

This is a good bottom bracket. It is a good value. It is a traditional square taper, which works very well. You really can't go wrong with this, especially if you are doing a budget build, like I was. Make sure you measure your frame to know what you have. I had a 68mm English thread. Unfortunately, the only way to know for sure what thread you have is to remove the existing bottom bracket. It's not hard to do, but you will need a special socket for your ratchet. I had to use a long breaker bar because the old one was in so tight. Also make sure to match the spindle length to the recommended length for the crankset you have or are buying.

My road bike had a chipped spindle which caused an ugly, concerning click whenever I pedaled hard. Seeing how affordable it would be, I decided to upgrade the cup-and-cone bottom bracket to a cartridge bottom bracket. I've done the same upgrade on a mountain bike, and I'm still overjoyed by the ease of installation cartridges afford us.

I have Panasonic bike from 1982 and it is 68mm x 124.7mm do I go down to the 122.5mm or up to the 127mm on the bottom bracket?

I would go with the larger 127mm size axle, because the smaller than original size axle may cause your largest chain ring to touch the frame. Also note you may need to adjust your derailleur since your chain rings will be moved slightly outward,

                            • A:

Depends on your chainline. If you go down in size, your chainline will move inbound by 1.1mm (124.7-122.5/2). If you go up in size your chainline will move out by 1.15mm (127-124.7/2).
