Sunrace MX3 10 Speed Cassette

Sunrace MX3 10-SPEED Cassette

The wait is over. Get that amazing 40 or 42 tooth low gear range, in a more economical form. The Sunrace MX3 10 speed Cassette might be your answer. It works on most current 10 speed systems from Shimano and SRAM. It's also a more cost effective way to go than the aftermarket expander rings, most of which can leave an uneven step and odd shifting in the cassette where another cog needs to be removed. This is a smooth and seamless block of cogs, designed for smooth and even gearing while giving the maximum range. The cassette works with most medium and long cage rear derailleurs, but may require a longer B screw to clear the large cog depending on the length of your derailleur hanger.

Sunrace MX3 10-SPEED Cassette features:

  • 6 Sprockets on 2 Alloy Spider Carriers
  • Manufacturer: SunRace (Sturmey Archer)
  • Compatibility: Shimano/SRAM 10 Speed
  • Freehub Style: Shimano / SRAM Freehub 10 speed freehub bodies
  • Weight: Approx. 380 grams (11-42)
  • Please note that this gear combination is not officially supported for 10-speed systems by the manufacturer. SRAM and Shimano both spec 36T as the maximum cog on their 10-speed rear derailleurs. There are a number of aftermarket derailleur accessories that will allow and/or improve shifting for these larger cassettes.

Works great!
The shifting isn't quite as smooth and quiet as Shimano but if you're looking to go with a wide-range 10 speed cassette this is way easier and less expensive than fooling around with one of the aftermarket expander cogs. I've got two of these cassettes and they both work very well.

Not bad
I was thinking I would break it, but it holds up real well. I do use a zee with a rad cage and it shift perfectly.

Great cassette
This is one of the few good options remaining for 10 speed 42t cassettes. Shifting is fantastic and looks great. Very happy with this cassette. On the heavy side, but for the price it can't be beat.

Better than I expected
Took some work to get the derailleur dialed in, initially it was skipping off the biggest ring. Once I got the limits and chain length right it's much better, still a bit jarring going from 36T to 42T. Given the 42T is just the emergency granny gear for my 1X (32T front) I'm very happy with the results.

Works great
I put this on with an xt medium cage derailleur, shifting wasn't as crisp as stock set up an the car ends of the cassette, I purchased the one up rad cage and shifts great. I got the 40T and is plenty of gear for me.

Excellent alternative to the expander cog set up
I was running an expander 42 cog for awhile and never got it to shift smoothly from the 13 tooth up to the 16/17 tooth. Got the Sunrace 11-42 black cassette and it matches my bike stealth look. Shifting was flawless on a Sram mid cage derailleur. Going to get another soon for my other bike.

1x10 is the way to go
Running the 11-42 with a clutched Deore/One-Up cage upgrade and it is shifting smooth. Paired with a 26T NW chainring on my 29er makes a 1x10 drivetrain an awesome climber, though most people would recommend bigger on the front for more top speed. Depends on what kind of trails you ride. Either way this 11-42 can give you the same range as a 1x11 with less gears to skip and less other parts to buy.

Does this cassette require a narrow wide chain and chainring?
Will on Aug 8, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I used a Race Face narrow wide chain ring. I do not know if it is required, doesn't seem like it should be.
There is something called a dog bone (or something like that) and an aftermarket derailleur arm available to make your derailleur shift smoothly with this cassette. I did not try either. I tried it with a Shimano SLX derailleur and an SRAM GX. Both long cage ten speed clutch derailleurs. It did not shift well with either.

Is cassette with 42 ring compatible with sram derailleur long cage ?
Scott on Oct 8, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Maybe, as it will depend on what model you are using because there is no "sram derailleur long cage", especially not now with all the different sram models of rear derailleurs on the market. I also have noticed not all bike rear derailleur attachment points are created equal thus your drivetrain may work well here but not over there on a different bike. Don't forget to set your screws on the derailleur and if its a one by system your pedaling then expect the chain to down shift/bind when you back pedal in the easiest gear or two.
I'm doing a 1/10 drive. With the 42 ring will the sram gx 10 speed derailleur work best?
Jason W on Jan 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I've used this with my SRAM X7 rear derailleur and works perfectly. The only concern, and this is for any type of 1X drivetrain, is to lose the chain when there is pedaling back, then the chain boots from 42 to 36. You have to be very cautious with this, especially on very steep climbs. I like 1X drivetrains but I rather prefer 2X.
Is the 42 tooth cog removable? I want the black cassette but I don't want the 42 tooth cog and I would like to use my Wolftooth 40t cog on this cassette.
JB on May 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: yes
but have tried the 40t and like the 42 better if you have one front ring and like to climb seriously vertical.

I find wolftooth no better than the sunrace or raceface IMHO.
I want to replace my Shimano HG-50 11-36 Cassette with this sun race 11-42.. I already converted the 2x to a 1x race face narrow wide 30 tooth front chain ring. I have a shimano diore RD 615 SGS long cage derailer. Came on my 2017 Giant Trance 3. Will this derailer work with this sun race cassette or do I need to change the derailer as well?
G Z on Mar 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You'll need to buy RD mods if you want to keep that RD, or suffer compromised shifting, like an One-Up cage.

it's a better long term decision to get a Shimano 11 spd mtn RD, like the RD-M7000, which will work with your Shimano 10spd shifter with this cassette. It's what I did. One less thing to buy if you decide to go with 11 spd.
Is this compatible with SRAM xd driver?
Josh on Aug 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No, this only fits on a Shimano style driver, not the Sram Xd.
I have a Shimano Saint rear, do you think this cogset would be compatible?
A shopper on Jun 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have a sram X0 on mine and that seems to be close. The saint is a smaller cage, so I would not think that it would work.
Does this GX type 2.1 10-speed work with the 40T sunrace cassette? Having problems with middle cogs but not sure if the Shimano SLX 10-speed shifter I'm using is the problem. It appears that I have the necessary hi/lo deraileur range within the limits.

SRAM GX Type 2.1 10 SPD Rear Derailleur
BEST ANSWER: Your shifter is probably the culprit, as it's definitely not compatible. SRAM and Shimano 10-speed systems have a different cable pull ratio. Your best bet is to get a SRAM 10 speed MTB shifter installed, which should work a lot better.

Hi. Can I replace my bikes Shimano HG 50 (11T-36T)with this? Do I have to change any parts for it to work? I currently have a Diore XT shadow plus derailleur. Thanks
Bruised Lee on Oct 30, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes you can run it but you may need to purchase a radr cage from Oneup for your rear mech. Some have said it will work without it but the shifting will suffer.
Hi,

It states 448 gram weight. Is that version with all steel cogs? I'm looking for one with 2 biggest cogs in Alu.

Thanks
Alex on Apr 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The weight on the MX3 11-42 is in the range of 380g. That's what the reviewers measured it at and consistent with my own measurement when I got mine.
