Great Fork
Picked this up to throw on an On-One 45650b for the purpose of bikepacking. It's a great fork, really responsive and stiff, but it rides smooth over the chunky stuff. Surprisingly light for being steel, too. It has those sweet auxillary bottle mounts for carrying extra water on those hot days, and clearance for days. I just run my 650b wheel in it so there's a bunch of clearance left over... a little goofy looking but it gets the job done cause it's the right length for my bike's geometry. The weight difference between this and a Karate Monkey fork is pretty minimal, just a few ounces from the extra braze ons basically. Might as well use one of these and get extra utility.

I've got a 2013+/- Specialized Crave 29" front suspension with disc breaks. I'd like to swap out the fork with the surly ecr 29" for cycle touring, possibly add front pannier rack. Will surly fork support that goal? Other than suspension, are there significant issues differences to expect? Clearances of wheel etc..?

BEST ANSWER: I put this fork on a Salsa Mamasita with the same goal in mind. Works well with front pannier. It is solid and sturdy feeling. Im running disc brakes and had to find a front pannier bag that would not contact the brake caliper. Difference is that small bump compliance is none, however very smooth ride over most ok pavement. You could probably fit a tire up to 2.4 but since you are not using it for trail riding anymore, go with narrower tire to save weight. I'm running a 2.1 and works well for commuting and fire road work
Can this be used with a tapered head tube?

BEST ANSWER: Sure thing! You can adapt a 1 1/8" steerer to a 1.5" headset using a reducer headset or crown race. The race is the cheaper option of you already have a headset pressed in. I've linked to a popular one from Cane Creek below.
