Heads up, singlespeeders! If youre trying to convert any recent model bike into a singlespeed, youve probably realized by now that since the dropouts are vertical, there isnt any way to properly tension the chain. Surly comes to the rescue with the Singleator. This handy device mounts to the derailleur hanger and provides proper chain tension in a simple, lightweight package.

I reversed the spring for the singulator to be pushing up on the chain and it works flawlessly. I've been using a standard tensioner most others have been using for years and it skips teeth and bouces around on decents. This one is dead quiet and never skips teeth even on the most grueling climbs (32x18 gearing). I like how the spring is internal and the unit is very nice looking. With the way I'm running this unit, it is almost unnoticable on the bike as it runs close the the bottom triangle rail. I love this thing.

I got one of these to convert my bike to a single speed. I ended up selling it on ebay because I couldn't get my chain to stop skipping. It's because of the chain wrap around the rear sprocket. It needs to be in the "pushup" set up in order for it to not skip. I didn't want to fool with it anymore. I put my shimano Deore XT rear derailler on in place of it ,adjusted the adjustment screws in acording to the chain line and It works just the way I wanted it to.

Comments about Surly Singleator:
You absolutely DO NOT need their overpriced bottle opener, the action of your Hex wrench sticks it to the frame and it's the *position* that makes tension...I really have no idea what that wrench is for.
Comments about Surly Singleator:
work s fairly well, sometimes chain will hit the frame but i havent had it pop off yet. the tool would help alot in the installation process but i made do.
Comments about Surly Singleator:
It's fussy to install and it performs poorly. They obviously cut corners on it's design and did not test it thoroughly.
Comments about Surly Singleator:
awesome if serious about converting to SS buy it worth the coin, spring up or down both work well chain stays where it needs to be, and im riding full rigid so it rough going, just be sure to get a straight chain line
Comments about Surly Singleator:
Did not perform well at all, chain kept popping off every time I was on a slight rocky area. the tension just could not hold and after a while I would have to readjust it for more tension on the chain.
Comments about Surly Singleator:
I have used this product in Light DH and medium jumps and doubles and really works fine, it keeps the chain in place and works as expected. Good stuff and using a Single Speed is better and simple.
Comments about Surly Singleator:
Fantastic product delivered in a natty paper bag. You do need an 18mm cone spanner, a thin one too, but do'nt worry about it just put it on according to the instruction and you'll be sweet.
Comments about Surly Singleator:
Overall, this is a better deal than a DMR tension seeker 2. It has less parts to deal with. You need an 18mm cone wrench to install, but the Pedro's wrench I bought with this product was too big to fit in the area it needed to go in to. Skip the tensioning mechanism and use a zip tie.
