My local bike mechanic suggested using one of these when truing my wheels with straight-pull spokes. When you try to adjust straight pull spokes (the ones with the nail-type head, as opposed to the J-hook), the spoke will simply turn with the nipple unless you hold the spoke steady. This tool holds the spoke without damaging it as pliers would. Also great for snugging cables, of course.
