Well, you need it to service certain Shimano pedals (most of the lower end clipless models, road and mountain). In a word, it works. Simple, cheap construction, and it mates flawlessly with the knurls on the axle sleeve, as is expected. Very helpfully, the tool is marked which way it needs to be turned to remove the axle for the respective pedal.
While there are wrench flats (and you can certainly use them to make the job easier) if you find that you really need to use a lot of leverage, stop, and use some penetrating fluid shot down the sleeve, as it is only made of plastic, and is quite likely you will shear the top off, ruining the pedals.

Makes it easy to disassemble SPD pedals for cleaning and re-lubing. Most pedals come apart easy using tool by hand but some are tough and require a little more force. The tool has built in flats for a wrench so you can easily remove the tight ones. Tool is made of plastic but holds up very well.
