This might be the BEST spacer/conversion kit for singlespeed use on the market! The SSK-3 kit actually creates a "channel" for the chain to run in, preventing it from popping off the cog.

I have both the options sold here -- the one with and the one without the guides. Each works equally well.
I run a 9 speed chain with both, however. I've found this option to be perfectly adequate for my needs (commuting).
Ridiculously easy to install (if you can change a cassette, you can install this product).
The steel cog is quite durable.

I installed this kit on a set of laserdisc 29ers for my rigid 29er beach cruiser build. Installation was very easy and I don't know how to use any bike tools other than a hex wrench, pedal wrench, or a chain whip. Put simply, I am no mechanic.
The problem I encountered here was that the channel that the chain sits in (created by the two tall spacers that you put on either side of the chainring) rubs against the chain and makes a lot of noise. I took it to my LBS and they couldn't figure out a way to stop the noise or the grinding either, we ended up just taking off one of the halves of the chain guide.
Other than that noise problem, it's a great product, easy to install, easy to convert my 9 speed hubs to single-speed use, and now I'm cruising.

I got into mountain biking at age 14. I did a few races back in the day, but now 14 years later I am just a recreational rider. I have a rigid singlespeed with slicks for around town and a hardtail 29er for the trails.

Experience has been great, for the money this conversion is dead on. I was able to get a proper chainline with zero skipping or dropping. Don't forget to get a chain tensioner. I used my old deore derailleur.

This is very simple to install, if you can remove and replace a cassette, you can figure this out. It was really easy to get a good straight chainline by just experimenting with the spacers.

Easy to assemble, with multiple spacers of varying width to allow perfection in your chainline. The spacers on either side of the cog are shaped to guide the chain and keep it from coming off.
