If you set these up right and use 'standard' pads such as kool stop, you'll get the best brake modulation at lower speeds available, negligible noise, and long term fiddle free performance. Even pad pressure reduces fading. I'd rather have this than most budget discs. And, yes, they will stop you from high speeds!
Product Used For: 2 or More Years
Product Strengths:Sophisticated parallelogram linkage XTR type design at cost of quality basic brakes. Pads seem 'better' than XTR which seem too hard for most non competitive situations. Can be replaced at a fraction of new rebuildable XTR. Very even pad pressure reduces rim wear.
Product Weaknesses:A bit fussy to set up initially. Eventually get worn out and sloppy, but still work well.
My Bike:Old style SC Heckler

luv em and almost feel bad for going with disc, slightly heavier then some brake sets, but not much, and the parrallel pull is thousands of times stronger
Product Used For: 2 or More Years
Product Strengths:weight, power, looks,
and everything else
Product Weaknesses:the xt brake pads are to hard and don't give as much force as some kool stop powerz, i think they don't make those anymore,
so strong that my seatstays don't cut it, and my seatstays are beafy
My Bike:specialized xc, stumpjumper, xt loaded access frame

So far these brake have been great, none of the squeal that I read about from many other reviews. I have approx 50 mi on them thus far...so still waiting. These brakes are the first component that I installed and adjusted myself (thanks to Zin). Did not use any front or rear toe...as addressed in many of the other reviews on other sites. For the price I think they are worth giving a try...if you want a good set of V-brakes for cheap!
Product Used For: 1 Month
Product Strengths:As earlier stated...they stop the wheels from turning, and for the price I would have to rate the value 5 stars.
Product Weaknesses:Other than not being disc brakes...none!
My Bike:Specialized FSR XC...upgraded to XT grupo and about to install a set on a Rockhopper
