Mountain bike riding has become gnarlier than ever so, it’s not if you’re going to crash, it’s when. Probably the most important of all protective gear is your helmet. There are basically two types of helmet out there to keep head protected, full face helmets and the half shell. The full face helmet offers the most protection by totally covering your head and face. You typically see this type of helmet being used for more extreme types of riding like downhill and freeride. For all other types of riding the half shell will usually suffice. The half shell covers the top, front, and back of your head while keeping your face open for better ventilation. The next bit of protective gear you should consider is arm and leg armor. This type of armor will go a long way to protect you from skinned knees, elbows, shins or forearms.
